is the file information on one example of a whole, series I am trying to convert to conventional dvd (pal) for a dear friend who cannot play xvid files.

The result using TMPG is very jerky, good quality but jerky, is it anything to do with the bit rate which is high for an xvid file.

    many thanks

  3. tried avs to dvd, it created similiarilly awful playing quality , am using windows 7 and with cuda enabled in tmpg, could that be why?

    and avi2dvd failed to encode

I would try to play them on a dvd player then onto a dvd recorder but the dvd player says will not play the resolution, the one I tried though was 800 x 500

Why are you converting from NTSC Divx (well, "NTSC" for lack of a better term) to PAL DVD? People in PAL land almost always can play NTSC DVDs fine. Making an NTSC DVD should fix the jerkiness problem. NTSC<->PAL conversions often cause the problem you see.

  5. You have a very good point--the good friend in question has a dvd player from the first generation in the UK and , yes it may not play NTSC DVD's I will find out.

I have not had much trouble converting pal <> to ntsc when the source is a DVD but this is the first time I have tried 29.97 fps to 25 fps xvid.

    I appreciate all the help.

I would have thought that dvd playback would be fine. Afterall most, if not all, VHS could handle NTSC and dvd came much later.

Your friend way well have tried a US dvd which did not play back. More likely to be zone issue than an NTSC one.

  8. TMPGEnc will simply throw away every 6th frame to create 25 fps from 30 fps. That leaves you with five little jerks every second. Are you seeing something worse than that?

  9. Probably not, I have also realised that I created a PAL DVD from the xvids, then played them back on a Philips dvd player which converted it back to NTSC for playback, !!! , a factor may be.

I am trying the "ntsc" xvid to NTSC DVD idea, see if that fixes it

Are all those 30 frames per second unique? Or do you notice dupes? If they are unique you may be stuck with what you got and that will probably be the best you can do for a PAL DVD.

  13. It would appear making a NTSC DVD is the answer it is much better, just gotta wait and see if the friends dvd player will play them
