Just curious what answers will be given. Personally the oldest machine I have now is a P4 machine that Ive given to my son. But I bet some of you have some really old ones set aside that still actually work.

So "What's your oldest working computer?"

I have a Mac SE/30: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_SE/30 It has a date of 1990 on it. Works perfectly. 9" B+W screen. Brick mouse. Original KB. Original manuals and software. Plays Asteroids and a few other games. Has a HDD and a 1.44MB floppy drive.

I also have a Amiga 2000 computer around here somewhere that's fully functional. 1987 vintage.

One good site for old PC info: http://oldcomputers.net/

    I have Windows 2000 installed on a home-built AMD K6 3+ processor (550MHz), with a VIA MVP3 motherboard
(the popular Epox mvp3GM). 256MB RAM. I use it everyday for basic web browsing (It barely will run Flash videos).

I put it together in 1999.

I have a dos 386 machine that should still work. I checked it after y2k and was still going but with a funky date.

It had dos 6.2 and win 3.1.

Before that I had a 286 but eventually got rid of that.

The 386 was a COMPUDYNE computer.

First ever real computer I've used was an IBM PC XT - very high tech in 1986 with a whopping full 8MHz of Intel speed.

I still have it and it works fine, but had to put in storage since its self esteem was taking a dip being an abacus among the younger beasts around that are churning HD video.

I did it a favor since putting it down sounds harsh.

I'm not sure which is older, my Commodore128 or my CommodoreSX64. Both still work, however the built in screen of the SX64 is getting pretty bad and I no longer have any usable 5.25" floppy discs.

  7. I'd have to go with my old socket 370, Pentium III (1 GHz) CPU !
It has a whopping 512 MB of 133 MHz SDRAM, and it is running Windows XP.

I currently have a bunch of (old) SATA and IDE Drives in it.
It's acting as an extra File Server/Media Storage device on my home network.
    Tualatin FTW !

I plan to move the data to my main server/HTPC (a it has a core2quad) after I save up for some more 2 TB (or 3 TB) Hard Drives, but it's gonna be a while.
I'm currently saving up for one of them fancy i-core intel CPUs for a new PC for my room, so i can get decent framerates with Dolphin & PCSX2.

  8. Radio Shack TRS80 model 1 with expansion port. I have it boxed up. I checked it a year ago and it still ran fine.
I have an IBM, but I lost the Boot BIOS disk so I don't know if it really works or not

There was more than one commodore computer? I see a 128, a c and a sx64 model listed here. This wasn't a one and done deal?

  11. Nope, there were several models available at that time. Same thing with the ataris. I had an Atari 800XL and also a 130XE.

I have a Macintosh 128K (the very first model from 1984) that I bought for $5 at a junk store. It turns on, and since it's all solid state with no moving parts, it's totally silent. It just flashed a disk icon with a ? in it. Probably because I don't have a System 1 boot disc...HAH

Hopefully not off-topic, but I had access to console computers, if they count here, an ECS and Adam (now probably rebuilt into tin cans).

Although both were major, and very costly, failures for their respective parent companies, they are very popular in history.

These would definitely be the oldest I've ever tried, and among the oldest in this thread. I'm wondering if anybody here still has one of these.

I don't think anything is "off topic" in the off topic forum.

All very interesting responses so far everyone.

Stiltman I wondered if anyone still had an old trash 80! I remember when my brother first brought it home.

I love the nickname "Trash-80", which always clearly reflected opinion. Depending on context, it can be a term of endearment or insult.

And everybody seemed to have an opinion on Tandy products...

Mine is probably my old TI-99/4A. I wonder if the data cassette tapes I wrote for it actually still work... especially since the tape recorder/cable for it were long since broken.

I also wonder if the floppies for my C64 (and C64C) still work... always meant to use one of those 1541>PC cables to dump my disks, but never did get the cable/interface. My uncle has the SX-64; I'll have to ask him if it's still working.

I loved (loved) my Adam, as it got me into BBSing, programming, and so many school projects. Eventually it became time to get an AT clone.

In memory, though, I bought an Adamlink modem, still in sealed box, to keep on my shelf. Now there's too much stuff on my shelf. I would part with it.

My neighbor's Dad went out and got the color one as soon as it came out. They couldn't stand the fact we had 2 computers before they even had one. I learned basic by verifying all my dad's commands, PAGES and PAGES and PAGES. I had the Model 1 with expansion and my Dad had the Model 3. After that I got a Digital Rainbow

Pentium 4 2.8 -- everything else was recycled long, long ago.
The moment these tools fail to function as needed, out they go, time for a new one.

Nice to see an, albiet former, Adam user. I've dabbled with the emulators for ECS and Adam and they brought back some memories. What's funny is that for the text stuff I was accidentally using hotkeys, mouse movements, etc, typically available in Windows based platforms. None worked.

oldest working, or oldest in use?

i have a pentium 4 1.8, and a pen4 2.8 that get regular use for obscure and miscellaneous tasks

i think the oldest one i still own is an old macbook, its a giant tank, i dont remember the os or name, its put away with an old portable inkjet printer.. to their credit, they both fit in one laptop bag... it was state of the art in the early 90's.. i dont think it can be used for anything anymore..

you can hook 4 computers up to 1 or two monitors, on one network, swithcable at the touch of a button

its good for downloading podcasts, long-running or automated tasks, converting, rendering, or for questionable security stuff.. etc..
