What is the best way to convert from .caf files (Actually can be renamed to .aiff) into .m4r so i can use them as ringtones for my iphone?
EDIT:Actually it is said that if you create an .aiff file and rename it to .caf, the iphone will handle it. But i dont see the opposite being true. I extracted some caf off my iphone and renames them to .aiff, but it seems that certain software that handle aiff files cant read this format...

Switch Audio Converter doesnt allow for caf files, and the one i used has a 60% limitation since its trial.
BTW I hate that i have to sync ringtones via itunes. It forces me to delete my music library, since i sync music files with mediamonkey. Now that i synced the ringtones i have to re-apply my music files as well. Damn apple. -
Hi
If you attach a sample caf file somebody will find a way to convert it. -

Not all .aiff files are created equal. Some software may support only a subset of the specification.
By comparing a converted .aiff file and the original .caf file in a Hex Editor, I found that the .caf file has a different file header, but the data is the same. The files are not the same, but they are very similar.
Hmm, the Mac version does. -
I found that audacity handles these files i'm using but i cant seem to find a supported windows binary of ffmpeg so that i can convert to m4r. Does anyone know where i can find a 0.6 ffmpeg zip archive.
After i convert i also need to test your ringtone playlist theory so that i wont have to erase my music library every time i need to sync ringtones. -
you need a special version of ffmpeg for audacity, you can find the info and links here
http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=FAQ:Installation_and_Plug-Ins#installffmpeg
if you were referring to generic ffmpeg, you can find autobuild binaries here

I have seen this pages. This is what i already tried from 1st link and didnt work http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/FFmpeg_2009_07_20_for_Audacity_on_Windows.zip
I'll just try one of this autobilds
EDIT:Tried one, but they dont contain the "avformat-52.dll" that is needed. -

(I will use example.ext to explain the process)
.caf to m4r: (or caf to m4a)
change example.caf to example.aiff >drag example.aiff into itunes music section > convert example.aiff using the iTunes AAC encoder - in settings (this will change it to example.m4a) > Drag the newly created file from iTunes to the desktop > Change example.m4a to example.m4r > OR leave example.m4a if you need it as m4a > Finished
.m4r (or m4a) to .caf:
rename example.m4r to example.m4a (if already m4a, skip this step) > drag example.m4a into iTunes and convert it to aiff using the iTunes AIFF encoder - in settings (this will change it to example.aiff) > drag example.aiff to the desktop > rename example.aiff to example.caf > OR leave example.aiff if you need it as aiff > Finished
Tested and works both ways. Hope that helps.
If you have a wav or mp3 (or other format), convert it to .aiff using audacity audio editor and then follow the instructions above. If you want the .caf into mp3, wav, etc, follow the conversion to .aiff and then convert the .aiff to whatever format using audacity.
