You have a Hp dv5 ... hope you made those os backup disks ... if not do it asap.
The problem generally stems from a form of file corruption.
Q: Can you open other locations without windows explorer crashing ?
1: No = time to use master system restore discs ... but first backup what personal files you can.
2: Yes = file corruption (a file in that location is causing the problem)
a: Open command prompt (right click > run as admin)
b: type cd.. press enter ... repeat till you are at C:
c: Type cd dir press enter
DIR = folder (directory)
So to go from C: to windows directory you would type
cd windows
This would bring you to c:\windows
Repeat for sub directories ie cd system32 ... press enter ... you are now at c:\windows\system32
====
Now if you followed that all you need to do is use the CD command to navigate to the folder which causes the problem.
Then type dir
A list of files and directories within that location will be listed
Next you simply type
del filename ... hit enter
filename = the name of a particular file you need to send to recycle bin
After each file is deleted try windows explorer and go to the download folder ... if it still has problem continue deleting files one by one ... by repeating this you should eventual have windows explorer not crashing ... therefore the last file deleted was problematic ... delete it from recycle bin and restore the other files deleted before it .
Its a long process when there are a large number of files involved. -
Get an Image backup program like: Easeus Todo Backup. It's good and it's free. Make a backup of your HD when everything is working well. Then, when you have a problem, you can restore to complete functionality in a short time. Work smart not hard!

You can try running a file check/repair start -> run -> SFC /SCANNOW

Hi .....
thx for help everyone, but unfortuneatly none of these solutions worked. i was trying to put convertxtodvd on my computer, but have since taken it off thinking that, that could be the file causing the problem, but it was,nt, so i,m back to where i started. has anybody else got any ideas, i would appreciate it. i can open all other files except that one, (downloads)
P.S. BJs i could,nt follow your solution, could you explain it in simpler terms please bjs? i would appreciate it very much.... -
Which version of Windows is that? Vista, or Windows 7?
Your downloads directory contains video files, I'm guessing? You could be experiencing the old annoying problem where Explorer crashes while trying to generate thumbnails for video files.
(Edit: You might try what JohnnyMalaria suggests in this post, to see if it may indeed be the thumbnail crash issue.)Last edited by Ai Haibara; 24th Sep 2010 at 16:07.

I thought you have XP since it happened all the time to me with Xp, very 6-7 months new install.
I used vista64 for 2.5 years without any issue and now 7 x64 and no issue so far.
I don't think there is a fix to your problem, unless a microsoft guru is around. -
i have an idea....why not try and install a windows explorer alternative? u can grab and try on of these apps..
http://www.lostintechnology.com/windows/6-free-windows-explorer-alternatives
after its installed, maybe the app itself will take over windows explorers duties, corrupt or not, and work...then you can use the app to navigate to the folders u want...it sure cant hurt -
Here's a link explaining some of the common dos commands you can use.
Internal DOS commands .... it's old school but still relevant especially for trouble shooting common problems like these.
====
Run dos prompt by right clicking it and choose "run as admin"
You will be at
C:\ ... \ ... ( ... denote directories for this example) ... usually this brings you to your current logon user directory
Type
cd.. and press enter (repeat this command till you are at C:\>) .. (in xp you will be at c:\)
Should the download location be a master directory and not within others then all you need do is type
cd downloads ... followed by hitting the enter key and you end up at
c:\downloads
Should several directories be involved simple repeat the command as followed in this example below
1: c:\
2: c:\cd temp (press enter)
3: c:\temp\cd downloads (press enter)
Now type DIR ... this will show a list of files within the current directory
To make it quicker simply type the following
del *.*
Pressing enter key and answer Y when asked and all files within that directory will go to the recycle bin (temporarily)
Now see if you can open the download directory via windows explorer.
If yes, then there's a chance one of the files that was there had corruption ... go to recycle bin and restore one file at a time and after each try opening that directory in windows explorer again ... repeat till the problem reoccurs ... the last file you restored is trigger the fault ... if it's not important then delete that file ... hopefully it will only be one file.
====
As for one of the previous posts reporting todo backup ... it can do nothing if the problem already exists ... it's too late.
Todo backup is a handy program if you wish to make daily, weekly, monthly backups ... for several reasons.
1: You've made changes to a file and failed to keep the original document ... but it is stored in the previous backup.
2: Idiot microsoft has released an update causing grief ... and they do it often
3: Severe virus / trojan issue.
4: You've bought a pc in ebay and received no backup disks ... a life saver.
5: You wish to try out trial software ... for what ever reason once the trail is over or task completed ... you want all traces of it GONE ... no damn left overs.
====
Hopefully the info give's you an understanding on how to use "dos prompt" box and you'll be able to resolve the current issue.
PS: If you want to delete individual files once you are in the directory you need to be at simply type del ????.??? (? = the whole files name including its extension) -
Hi gang....
i worked out the problem i had with the windows explorer has stopped working. it was as simple as deleting the two files i had in utorrent, & then out of my recycle bin, problem fixed. big thx to everyone out there that put in an appreciative effort in helping to solve this mess. cheer,s everyone..... -
So you really didn't fix the problem but have put it off. Next time you download a media file that an installed codec can't handle through windows explorer it'll happen again.
For me, it was when I started using makemkv to, well, make mkvs instead of divx/xvid avis of my dvds. The problem was using (which it did by default, not because I explicitly chose it...) the compress option. I rebuilt the mkvs without the compress and all was well again.Have a good one,
neomaine
