The player will take about 2 minutes of reading a CD-RW then say it is a video cd with no actual movie time on it. It won't read cdr's...does it recognizing it has a video cd mean it will work if I find the right cds?

If your standalone player plays correctly burnt VCD's on a media layer it recognizes - YES.

Have you checked the DVD Player compatibility list?

Unfortunately there are no comments on this player. But since it at least recognizes the cd it should play them if I try some different brands right?

If you go by the list blue layered CD-R's should be fine or silver layered CD-RW's.

ok I managed to get the videos playing on a maxell cd-rw but they play then freeze, play and freeze etc.. I also had similar results with memorex. The player refuses to play even audio cd-r of any color. Should I try different brands of CD-RW?

Yep! Otherwise the only solution is getting a second DVD Player

Why buy another player? Use Mr. Write CD-RW. My player rejects Memorex and Maxwell CD-RW but accepts Mr. Write CD-RW.
