My video files were converted from my mobile to avi and mpeg formats, aeons ago, most likely using different programs. Ive just tried adding these files to some dvd creation programs that accept these formats (eg trial of moviefactory), but the preview and final output always has no sound, only the video. What is odd is that these same converted avi and mpeg video files play fine in vlc and wmp, sound included! In a test, I found that video files such as adverts in avi and mpeg formats from the internet, will work in moviefactory ok, with audio ....so its very likely that my initial conversion tools that converted my mobile videos to avi and mpeg formats in the first place, may have missed some initial information-for some dvd creation programs to understand that these files DO contain audio (usually mp3), despite these converted to avi and mpeg videos working with audio in all players fine such as vlc and wmp.
If anyone has the knowledge, im wondering what the most likely reason is for some programs not recognising the fact that my video files have audio, and what tools I can use to "correct" my avi and mpg files basic information, so that they will work in dvd creation tools that will accept these two formats, and realise that they really do contain audio? thanks for any help![]()

Just so I dont confuse anyone - my files were originally various mobile formats.
I converted most to avi, as most of the mobile formats are not accepted in my "video to dvd" program that I wish to use. My converted avis work great in vlc, and with sound. The audio codecs in all these converted video files is definately MPEG-3, at 128kbps, 44100hz. I can check this in vlc, xp, and in the programs you mention, and of course I had selected MP3 for all my mobile format to avi conversions, so I already knew they were MP3!lol. But then I convert them to dvd, theres never any sound! Using the file codec detection tools and even xp itself, they all state the correct mp3 info in my avis, so ive no idea what the problem could be...
...The audio used in all videos (both from my avis, and net avis-are all joint stereo, so thats not a problem either-just in case some "to dvd" creation tools couldnt accept joint stereo formats). Its very strange. There cant be issues with all dvd creation tools, yet they all cannot play my originally 'converted to avi' video audio (yet the video all play perfectly, although silently)! I have used more than one "mobile to avi" tool, and since they all have no sound after converting to dvd, it would seem they all must be missing info in the avi files in some form or another? It does not make a difference as to what codec my avis use (xvid, ffds etc), its the same result-the sound will play in all windows players absolutely fine, just not at all when converted to dvd-aargh!
In comparison, converted avis from the net work with sound when converted to dvd in the same "video to dvd" program, so I dont understand whats missing.... why would all the "video to dvd" creation tools I have tested have trouble with previewing, playing, and using my avi videos audio? All my troublesome avis I had converted myself using various conversion tools in the past, yet for avi using various avi codecs that are downloaded off the net as a test (eg advertisements), the audio in the final dvd (using any"video to dvd" tool) will always play fine in both its preview and on disc.Last edited by extent; 30th Aug 2010 at 08:17.

yeah-perhaps the tools I used to convert to avi initially werent doing their job, but if these same converted files work with sound in all players, and all audio properties for all these avi files can be clearly read in windows, then why the 'no audio' issues when added to any convert to dvd creation tool?
Ive just tried using daniusoft video converter, it can convert some mobile videos to avi. Its doing the same thing! The only fix I can find is to edit/convert my files to wmv, and then add them to my dvd creation tool... but if downloaded short avis work, then that at least proves that ALL "video to avi" tools must not add all the information required to the finished avi in order for it to work in my dvd creation program. Im using moviefactory at the moment to convert to dvd-which may just be fussy/awkward with what it accepts... but there must be an easy way to fix my videos if this is the case?Last edited by extent; 30th Aug 2010 at 09:12.

Most media players use Directshow or their own built in decoders. Many editors use VFW and ACM. You need different decoders for Directshow vs VFW/ACM.
Maybe you should post small samples of files that work and files that don't. But I've never had a problem like yours. About the worst problems I've seen with MP3 is out of sync audio from VBR mp3 files with some software.Last edited by jagabo; 30th Aug 2010 at 09:36.

can you recommend a good tool to cut up a small video to post on here as an example, without modifying anything? heres an example from one of my avi files that has no audio, windows and vlc properties fully show audio within the avi :-
my other avi videos with sound that also dont work in dvd conversion, have "MP43" or "MJPEG/motion JPEG video" showing (instead of the MP4 showing for the video codec, as in the left image above with VLC), but they all have MP3 for audio, at similar bitrates. I think if I uploaded a video, you would have to try a seperate "avi to dvd" program yourself (such as MF7) to notice that the audio does not play at all, in order to try and solve the issue? although I have "solved" the problem by converting some files to WMP instead of AVI (using the same daniusoft conversion program!), I wouldve liked to find out why MF was disliking all daniusoft AVI and preferring daniusoft files only when converted to WMP in order to play the same audio..very odd! Im not sure why when I convert to XVID AVI it shows XVID MP4, but I have tried editing ".avi" to ".mp4" and its still the same outputted dvd with no sound. It shouldnt matter however, since MF accepts both mp4 and avi for the container format, and xvid for the codec.

You can use VirtualDub to mark a small section and save it without re-encoding.
1) File -> Open Video File
2) Video -> Direct Stream Copy
3) Mark-in, Mark-out
4) File -> Save as AVI.
You might try a quick remux with VirtualDub too. Use the above instructions, but skip step 3. See if you're apps will work with the resulting AVI. In a worst case, where you can't fix the problem, you can use VirtualDub to decompress the audio. The apps should work with that (you're going to recompress to AC3 anyway, so you would just be doing this with VirtualDub rather than the DVD authoring software).
1) File -> Open Video File
2) Video -> Direct Stream Copy
3) Audio -> Full Processing Mode
4) Audio -> Conversion (if necessary, ie 48 KHz, 16 bit, stereo, high quality)
5) File -> Save as AVI -
I tried a quick direct stream copy for both audio and video - no audio in MF when my avi is added!
I tried a quick remux - still no audio in MF!
I tried a remux marking a specific area and then saving again - still no audio!
I tried re-encoding the audio to different formats - nope! no audio! lol
I tried re-encoding both the audio and video to specific formats - aaargh!!! nothing can be heard!! again! :O
I tried re-encoding both the audio and video to specific formats, marking out a specific area - still no audio playing in MF before and after any dvd creation!
It would seem to be a problem with MovieFactory that I am currently using, with the lack of audio in my files, its my only explanation - although it clearly doesnt explain as to why ALL avi doesnt work, and ALL wmp within MF does work, with all audio within any video clearly being heard in any preview and completed dvd. Perhaps there is compatibility issues with daniusoft converted files to avi, I dont know. My files converted to avi using daniusoft clearly have differences when comparing to avi that I havent made myself, since all internet avi works fine in MF.. so this is very strange indeed. I end up thinking if there is any initial info contained within my avis that MF could be missing out on reading....BUT after adding my own converted to avi files into MF, MF can clearly state within it that my files do contain audio (showing identical info to my images above), so I just dont get it
Heres an example - summer of this year in scotland via mobile phone, lol, a converted file, now xvid/avi format, just like the rest of what I have- and as ive mentioned, its sound will play fine on any avi compatible player, yet you will probably hear nothing on any "avi to dvd" converter such as MovieFactory, in both the dvd preview and final dvd output. Mess around with the avi yourself in virtualdub or related utilities, its of fairly low sound and video quality, and just over 3 mb. see if you can make it work in MF and find where the problem lies. thanks to anyone that wants to try and help solve my problem :-

PS the audio problem seems to have been around since MF4, so although there might be a difference between my own converted files and ones created by others of the same format, im not the only one with the sound problem :- http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/9657-problem-sound-ulead-movie-factory-4-a.htmlLast edited by extent; 31st Aug 2010 at 13:57.
