Recently, I converted 6 avi files from three different tv series to DVD mpeg2enc, all with subtitles encoded. All six of the avi files play perfectly synced when I watch them using VLC or QT.

Two of the files (from the same tv series) converted perfectly with subs and audio in sync. The other four (two each from two different series) converted successfully, but with an audio lag that grows increasingly longer as the file plays. All of the avi files are in the HAN container, which has a framerate of NTSC FILM, so I adjust the framerate to NTSC (29.97). When I check the Mplayer Preview before encoding, the audio is in sync. All of the avi files are from series that have been successfully converted in the past few weeks. Here is the information from one of the files with the audio lag (included only parts with info and skipped the repeating parts):

The issue is probably the sped-up video, but it's easier to shorten the audio to make it match, if the solution can't be found in the encoding.
I know it's hard to measure, but could the audio lag be around 25%, i.e. 16 seconds of video need 20 seconds of audio to get to the same point? That would be explainable with a NTSC FILM/NTSC mixup.

I have no idea what that is.

Why would you adjust a framerate that is perfectly fine for DVD? Changing the framerate is one possible cause for sync issues.

MPlayer is playing the source file; any encoding issue wouldn't show at this time.

You also cut out the audio encoding part, although I don't expect anything weird there.

Never thought of it that way; will try and measure. It's kind of funny that it's been working fine for a while now and all of a sudden this problem crops up, but only for certain series.

If I don't change the framerate, the resulting video is only a portion of the video -- a 60 min. video is only 25 minutes long. Changing the framerate was the only way to get the entire video to encode properly.

Ah, I see. Thanks, I learned something new!

I just did two more episodes with no problem, but still can't get those 4 that didn't work earlier to work.

The way I see it, those four files have something ‘special’ about them, that may not be apparent with some players, but crops up at conversion time.

One other suggestion: mpeg2enc allows for one of three decoders to use: QuickTime, mplayer or ffmpeg. You can select that in the Options tab. The default QuickTime decoder is pretty good, but can get confused by some files occasionally. If a conversion error occurs which might be caused by a decoder, then it's worth to try another decoder. (Unchecking both QuickTime and mplayer sets ffmpeg as the decoder.)
So do try these two alternatives to see if the conversion goes better that way for these files.

I'm trying your suggestion now--deselected "decode with quicktime" under options and running mpeg2enc again.

Earlier, a new episode became available and I tried mpeg2enc changing the framerate to NTSC (29.97) like I usually do, and the same problem of lagging audio occurred.

Then I tried mpeg2enc again leaving the framerate at NTSC FILM. The result was the whole episode (65 minutes long) was shortened to 30 minutes, with less audio lag.

I've kept the process information for both, but will run mpeg2enc after adjusting the option, and will see how that goes before I post the process info.

Thank you for your suggestions. Will post update as soon as it is complete.

The file that I tried to encode with "decode with quicktime" deselected failed to finish. It stopped at about 30 minutes (out of 65 minutes).

Of the different variations, the closest seems to be the original--and I guess I'll just live with them being a second or two off on the audio. Another mystery of life!
