I do not have a Blu Ray player yet so I guess my first assumption is, that it can play dvd's. If that being the case, is it possible to lets say use a program such as convertxtodvd and import multible vobs/mkvs and make some kind of custom iso file that could be burned onto blue ray media and have dvd9 quality?

Not ConvertXtoDVD, but MultiAVCHD can import SD DVD VOBs and author ready for burning to bluray. Don't think you can keep your original menus though. You can also mix SD and HD material on the disc, so 720p AVC material can co-exist with SD DVD material
