  1. I'm using DVDFab to convert DVDs to an image file. I then use DVD Decrypter (via the mounted image) to convert the ISO file to VOB. Is there a better way to decrypt and convert DVDs to VOB files, especially new DVDs (i.e. Shutter Island)?

Yeah, just rip straight to a VIDEO_TS folder instead of ripping to an ISO.

And you are not "converting" anything, ISO is just a container that holds all the VIDEO_TS files,

  3. Great how do I do that without getting six different VOBs tho?

I only want one big file that I can use as an original to convert to other formats specifically mp4.

And yeah, btw, I realize there are ways of doing this directly (DVD to mp4) but I'm a bit OCD and like to do it step by step.

Well ripping gets you the dvd in its original structure.

One way would be to use vob2mpg and then you get a single mpg file.

You might want to try a different tool than whatever you are using. I'm sure there have to be ones for making mp4s that recognize an entire dvd structure instead of needing to point it to each vob file. Try xvid4psp or super for example. (but yes this would be after its ripped to your harddrive)

  5. Well I do use Super to convert from VOB to mp4, but as far as making it recognize merge and convert all six original vob files into one file of a different format, I have no idea how to do that. That's more or less what i use dvd decrypter to do.

Once you've ripped the DVD (in its original form, with all (multiple) .vob/.ifo/.bup files present), just run VOB2MPEG against it, which will repackage it into a single MPEG file. No re-encoding, so you don't have to worry about quality loss.
