  1. I just bought a Canon VIXIA HF M30 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder. I previously used a Sony minDV standard camcorder and a Panasonic camera with 720p camcorder function. I only test the new m30 for a few nights. Here are my experiences and questions.

After shooting for a few minutes indoor, I connected the camcorder to the computer, and transfer the video files directly or through the canon software, then play them with windows media player with the newest K-lite codec full installed. I can hear very loud background noise. I then connect the camcorder to the 52-inch HDTV through analog audio and component (don't have mini HDMI cable yet), the picture quality is much better but the audio noise is still there, not that loud but very disturbing.

The second day I brought the camcorder to a piano recital in a Hall with very good lighting. I was shooting far away, with full 15X zoom. When at home, I directly connect the camcorder to the HDTV and found surprisingly the background noise are acceptable. However, surprisingly, I did not observe much difference among the following movie settings.
    LP (5Mbps) 3 hours
    SP (7Mbps) 2 hours 20 minutes
    XP+ (12Mbps) 1 hour 25 minutes
    FXP (17Mbps) 1 hour - Allows 1920 x 1080 Full HD Recording
    MXP (24Mbps) 40 minutes - Allows 1920 x 1080 Full HD Recording
    MXP: 40 minutes

Of course none of the quality is good at the beginning. I will test again in a outdoor setting. Still, all of them are much better than the videos I shoot using a standard miniDV camcorder or a Panasonic camera on the 720p movie mode.

    Now here are the questions:

    1. Audio noise. Is my Canon m30 normal to have such loud noise when shooting indoor in a quite environment?
    2. windows media player vs camcorder. I always found files played by a camcorder have a much picture quality. Also, I used brit-view BV5005HD to play those files on my HDTV,the quality is similar to play on the computer. Am I missing something? Are there some softwares out there that can mimic the effect of a camcorder, I guess, reducing the background noise, making the picture more smooth and vivid?

    Thanks for any suggestions. Thanks.

    1. This is due to auto gain pumping up ausio level to the max so only noise is heard. Check the camcorder for manual gain function.

    2. Question not clear. Your camcorder uses interlace AVCHD format. WMP will poorly deinterlace it and poorly resize it to your computer monitor.

If you can't see the difference in bit rate settings, you have a very poor HDTV.

  3. If I understand correctly, what you mean is the MTS file (AVCHD) should be converted to another format so WMP can deinterlace or resize correctly for the computer monitor?

    Thanks.
