My brother went to shut down his computer tonight and it won't shut down. Windows shuts down and the monitor says it's ready to turn off but all the fans and lights stay on. The only way to turn it off is to turn off the power supply. If he turns the power supply back on, all the fans and lights come back on.

I've never seen this and I can't find anything with search on here or on Google.

Checked power settings and BIOS but could not find any settings to fix this.

Motherboard is Intel DG965WH with 3.2Ghz Pentium D.

Probably a short in the power supply that bypasses the off switch that the motherboard sends. I had this problem and replaced the PS and it worked like normal again.

Thanks! That was my first thought. I'll see if I have a spare in my parts boxes tomorrow to try. If not, he'll have to buy a new one. They don't seem to last very long. He bought his son the same Raidmax case that came with the same power supply and it went out a couple of months ago.

Used the power supply out of my old computer and it fixed the problem.

    Thanks!

  5. Does the computer shut down properly from safe mode?
    To boot into safe mode:
    Boot up the computer.
After the POST (the *beep*) start tapping on the F8 key over and over again.
You should get a boot menu.
    Choose safe mode.
Now...try a shut down. Did it work?
If yes... boot up and try a clean boot.
    To clean boot the computer:
    Go to start>>run>>msconfig
    Choose selective startup.
Take the check out of everything underneath.
Click apply>>ok and reboot when prompted.
When you finally get back up... i'm guessing you will have to still physically turn off the computer for the changes to take effect... try a shutdown again.
If it does not work, go back to msconfig and start troubleshooting by rechecking things one at a time. You will find your culprit in there somewhere.
