    Hi.
I´ve got an AMD dual-core x2 2.5 cpu right now.
It works OK, but I would like to get way faster with video-encoding.
So what processor do you prefer? AMD quad core x4 2.6, or AMD phenum 2 quad 3.4 ghz?
How much faster would the to CPU´s be to the one I have now?

As an alternative, you can consider GPU based encoding, although the possibilities might be very limited.
You need also to have a modern video card (ATI or nVidia).

    Blue Ray encode

    E8400 @3.6GHz - 12-16 hours
    I7-920 @3.6GHz - 4-5 hours
    AMD x4-620 @ 3.25GHz - 5.5-6.0 hours

Any Quad-core will give dramatically faster encodes.

If you're an overclocker, the Intel I7-930, I7-920, I5-750 and AMD 1050T are the top CPUs in the x264 benchmark.

The new Intel K models are out which come with unlocked multipliers so as soon as the data comes out, they should be king of the overclockers.

    Intel Core i5-655K Clarkdale 3.2GHz 4MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 73W Dual-Core Unlocked Desktop Processor - $219.99

What's your budget? Get a AMD 6 core cpu or if money is no option then get a Intel i7 Quad. If you're on a budget get a AMD 620 or 630 Propus Quad which overclocks very well with the right motherboard/ram.

True, However looking at the chart you also go almost 1.5 times faster. You will always pay a premium for the best. If your time is valuable then $1000 is nothing. If the $1000 lets you meet a deadline then it is priceless. For home use I wouldn't pay that much either.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.
