I have a video of a soccer game in three parts, mp4 format. I've tried playing the first two parts but always the same result, the audio is fine but there is no video. I've played it in VLC, Media Player Classic, and Windows Media Player. The first two have no video but good audio. In WMP there is nothing but a message that it doesn't recognize the file format. VLC has a message window but there are no messages in it other than a default message that says I'm running VLC with the default interface.

I downloaded Avidemux and can see the video so I know it's there. But that's as much as I know to do. Can someone recommend an mp4 repair program or give me some direction for fixing this problem.

    Thanks, jc

Forgot to mention, I checked all three parts with Gspot. For each one, in the video section, the codec is listed as avc1. But in the status box is says: codec status undetermined. This seems to be a clue, but I'm new to this and it's over my head. I checked some other avi and mp4 files with Gspot, ones that I've played on this computer and know to be good, and some of them were listed in the video section as status: codec(s) are not installed.

Use MediaInfo to get information on the files instead. GSpot's support for containers other than AVI and MPEG is rather limited, and often, it'll show the 'Codec Status Undetermined' message (as you noticed) for those 'other containers.'

Thanks for the MediaInfo suggestion. I installed it and have a nice list of information for the mp4 file that won't play video. The format is shown as AVC, the codec as avc1. I also downloaded and installed the K-Lite 6.04 Mega codec pack and a from Microsoft.com a WMP codec installation package. VLC still won't play the video, and I tried MediaPlayerClassic, which now (instead of playing the audio and no video) shows a message box with a list of information, including this: The following pin(s) failed to find a correctable filter: DivX H.264 Decoder :: Xform Out. I thought I saw DivX H.264 in one of the codec packages I installed, but I did have to make some choices in the installation (ie Home Cinema for the MPC codec installation. I just ran the K-Lite tweak tool and created a text log of all the codecs installed. One of the lines is: ffdshow vid: H264=0 XVID=1 DX50=1 DIV3=1 MPEG2=0 VC1=1 RAW=0 I see another H264=0 somewhere else in the log. I assume this means the DivX H.264 isn't installed. If this is true, can someone tell me how to get it installed...it must have come with the K-Lite Mega pack. I just ran the K-Lite ffdshow video decoder configuration and H264/AVC is listed as disabled. Right clicking on this line gives me two choices and I need help deciding which to take: 1. set all stable formats to libavcodec , or 2. set all supported formats to XVID. This might fix my problem, but which choice do I make...I would appreciate some help here!

Sorry all the lines are running together, this forum software doesn't recognize spaces between lines (which I placed so it would be more readable).

Looks like I have a partial solution. I have video now(in MPC) using either of the two choices I mentioned. But a further problem has occured. In Media Player Classic, the video is playing in jerks, looks almost frame by frame, and is using 95-99% of my processing power. I have an older P4 computer, 600 mb Ram, video card is ATI Rage XL PCI with 8mb memory. I'm not using all of my RAM (have 230mb free while playing this video), but the cpu% is so high that this video is unplayable. Could this be because the graphics card doesn't have enough memory to handle an mp4 video file? VLC still won't show any video, but is also using a high cpu% (90-99%). usually don't have this problem with other video files I play (avi or mp4), but I have seen it a few times. Any suggestions?
