I have two DVD Drives. One is a sata buner- it is fine . I used a hacked firmware on it a while ago and it reads at around 10x
The other one is a IDE DVD Rom. It' an Aopen com5232 AAH Pro. It reads at around 4x. I've tried every possible combination of words looking for a speed hack in google. I even upgraded to 1.08 firmware. Nothing works. It just keeps crawling.
I am trying to transfer 10-20 TB worth of unencrypted DVDs to hard drives. And the fast drive sees some of the discs as empty. The slow drive has no problem reading them, but the speed is driving me nuts. If anybody has any ideas on how to get the slow drive to read at a normal speed, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Your Aopen com5232 AAH Pro dvd-rom is a old drive the laser is prolly dying which is why the read speeds are slow. Buy a new dvd burner since it's so darn cheap these days. Newegg has a $19.99 Liteon dvd burner with free shipping, sale ends on 5/24/10.

Thanks for the reply. The DVD Rom is around 4 years old. It came out of my mother's computer when it died. She never used the DVD Rom, even once. And I hardly used it. So it's not a wear and tear issue. Unless the laser was bad from the start. But that wouldn't explain why this drive will read the problem discs.
Which brings me to my other problem. I already have a LiteOn and used a hacked firmware to increase the read speed- it was slow at first too. And it wont read the problem discs. The slow drive is the only drive that actually reads the problem discs. I've tried 4 different drives. So buying a new drive probably wouldn't help me.
I just want to get the one I already have to work. -
Just because you used hacked firmware doesn't mean the drive will be able to rip at faster speeds. It's never a guarantee that it will work. Change the IDE cable and see if that works. IMHO it would be better to have a drive that can read problem discs even though it reads slow. What 4 drives have you tried? You only mentioned 2. Dude dvd drives are so damn cheap these days. I just bought a SONY OPTIARC 7240S drive that rips very well and it's not using any hacked firmware. LmFaO! First time for me not to use hacked firmware. IMHO LITEON drives are good rippers and I don't use them to burn dvd or cd media. I strictly use them as rippers.

Well I can't find any hacked firmware for the slow DVD Rom. And the IDE cable is one year old- it came with the motherboard when I bought it brand new. But I could try another one.
The other two drives are the drives in my two laptops. The only drive I haven't tried is my Blu Ray burner. I bought that, realized I had no use for it and plan to throw it on Ebay as unused. So far, I've never installed it. So I'm trying to stay away from that one.
And I get what you're saying about drives being cheap. But dropping money on a drive (even if it's just $20) when there is a decent chance it wont read the problem discs or read at a slow speed isn't something I want to do. I guess if I have to, I will just live with the slow rip speeds. Like you said, it's better to have a slow drive than nothing at all. -
IDE cables can fail over a period of time which is why I suggested you buy a new one.

Remember that using hacked firmware isn't always going to work. IMHO you would do better with a new dvd burner because most manufacturers do not have the read speeds locked. LG is the exception as they still have the slowest read speeds but can be unlocked using MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT.Last edited by budz; 22nd May 2010 at 19:10.

Thanks for the link. I pulled the DVD Rom out. But I will throw it back in and give it a shot ASAP.
