how to adjust brightness and smoothness of an avi file

i installed nimo codec and with it installed this file (vobsub 2.08}....i noticed that my shows seem much darker..i cannot differentiate the colours when the pictures has many dark colours like in the night.....but the blockiness of the pictures seems to b reduced and it seems crisper...can any1 tell me how to adjust the brightness of the picture...dont tell me to adjust my monitor ...i did juz dat and did not wrk...haha :lol:

Use virtual dub and use its filters to brighten up the video. I use it and it works pretty good.
