    hi all,

i've got some hd sources but i want to convert them to avi files, im converting the audio fine to cbr mp3 320 (not to fussed on sound quality since it's only coming out of tv speakers).

anway im converting them so they will play on many different media players in the house, and all play mp3 sound and seem to like xvid and divx 6/7.

which is best to use thou, i'm keeping the full h.d. resolution when converting, and never really had much problems using xvid before, but when i seem to use divx 6/7, on playback it seems to stutter sometimes (jump frames).

what are your views on using xvid or divx for this ?

  2. Xivd gives slightly smaller files when using constant quality encoding, slightly less macroblocking with bitrate based encoding. But the differences aren't big. One place where you have to be careful with Xvid when using constant quality (quantizer) encoding: it ignores the bitrate cap of the currently selected profile. So you can end up with bitrate peaks that are too high for some players.

  4. Avoid using Xvid's GMC. It uses a three warp point method that no hardware Xvid decoder supports. Divx uses a single warp point GMC which some hardware decoders support. But, for maximum flexibility, I would avoid that too. GMC rarely helps compression much anyway. Also, Quarter Pixel (QPEL) isn't supported by most older hardware decoders. You may want to avoid that too.
