How would I go about setting my computer to shut down if my CPU fan were to stop working?? Or is this usually set by default?
Just started thinking about this since the fan is making a funny noise every now and again. It's old

Dunno about the fan stopping specifically, but most CPUs/MBs will shut down on an over-temp situation (mine would, anyway, before I upgraded the CPU cooler). That would essentially be the same thing.
But, check your BIOS; any such setting would be in there. -
go into the mobo bio's and set it to shut down automatically if you have that feature or to enable it to shut down.....read the mobo manual.

Most MBs BIOSs just have a adjustable setting for a alarm if the fan quits or overtemp. The Motherboard and the CPU, especially newer CPUs, will throttle back the CPU or shut it down completely if the CPU overheats enough. I had a PC a couple of months ago that the CPU cooler mounts broke off and the heatsink was only touching a corner of the CPU. It would turn on for about ten seconds before the PC shut down. But I've had older CPUs from several years ago that would go up in smoke if that happened.
There's several MBs under that model number. The shot from the BIOS here doesn't appear to have much for adjustments. It looks like the Cool and Quiet program can control CPU fan speed and seems to have a temp alarm there also.
If the fan is noisy, I would replace it ASAP. -
Ok thank you. I get a little paranoid about little noises like that so I'll go to Newegg for that cooler I've been looking at

If you are using a stock cooler or a marginal one, a upgrade can never hurt.
Clean the old gunk off the CPU with 99% isopropyl alcohol and a damp paper towel, low lint if possible. Then finish up with a few dampened Q tips to get the nooks and crannies. Don't get any finger prints on the CPU or the heat sink.
If it comes with thermal compound already applied, you can use that, or aftermarket compound. I would recommend you pull the motherboard to change the CPU cooler unless you are really used to working in cramped places. But take your time and read the instructions throughly. Most thermal compound takes a few days to cure. Check with something like HW Monitor and see if the temp drops after some time curing. http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
If the CPU hasn't ran too hot already and the compound is still in good shape, just changing out the fan is another option. Most coolers use standard fans, so not all that difficult to change. -
Get the inexpensive CM Hyper 212+ cpu cooler....best bang for da buck....I don't use the stock fans.....I just use Scythe S-Flex G and F fans in a push/pull configuration....that Hyper 212+ comes with brackets instead of the wires to hold the 120mm fans to the fins...so much easier that way.

Exactly the cooler I've had my eyes on
Every since you posted it in a thread a while back I've been waiting for a reason to get it. Didn't feel like making my current one go to waste but now its acting up so... yippee
The cooler I have now doesn't have a detachable fan so can't just replace that but this upgrade will save some money in the future in case another starts to die.
Thanks for the info redwudz, I have a couple tubes of Arctic Silver that I got a deal on when I got my new PS but I forgot all about the MX2 or 3 that budz suggested a while back. I kicked myself in the butt after thatmaybe I'll get some this time.
I've been surviving with a little frustration working with the mobo installed but I may have to pop it out for the cooler I want
