I have an LG monitor that I play 360/PS3 using VGA input. This monitor doesn't have component input. I want to get a Hauppauge HD PVR and was wondering if this Component to VGA Converter would work so I can still play in VGA, but record also.

If this does not work please suggest what ways I could get it to work. Just a note my monitor does support HDMI - in case there are options using HDMI that could work, but VGA is my priority. Also don't suggest the Intensity Pro as an option.

You have two problems using the HD PVR. First you need to feed it analog components from the XBox, not VGA. Then on the output side, a converter box like you show produces poor monitor picture quality vs. the direct VGA you are used to.
HDMI solutions are limited.
The way I know works is a HD PVR analog component loop to a small HD LCD-TV which can be had for ~$200 at 20" size. This configuration can replace your LG monitor or provide a second TV or computer display.
For example, these 1366x768 19" have nice picture quality

Or this 22" which sometimes is on sale for around $200.

I mean its going to be an analog signal to the HD PVR by using the component cables, but then the converter used on the output end. I still have the component cables that the 360 originally comes with, just don't use them because the monitor doesn't support them. That's the whole point of getting the converter. According to some amazon reviews that converter has good quality I'm assuming.

Lacks specs. Seems to be limited to 480p so what's the point?
If you are happy with these user ratings, try it.

This one looks better but costs $385. Better to spend that money on an HDTV.

I haven't seen one. You need to seek user reviews for your application.

I searched some reviews and it looks good. Disregarding how one of these converters will look quality-wise, I want a final answer on if one will WORK from HD PVR component output --> Component to VGA Converter --> VGA input? Its almost as if I'm answering my own question...that's just what a converter does anyway? -
It says it supports 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i components same as XBox and HD PVR.
I'd assume if you put 1280x720p YPbPr in, it will give 1280x720p RGBHV out. I wouldn't expect it to do well with 1080i (interlace).
1080p isn't usually supported for analog components.
Let us know how the box works for you.Last edited by edDV; 12th Apr 2010 at 02:59.

Make sure your VGA monitor accepts the resolutions and refresh rates the converter puts out.
