Saw some threads on this at this site with the 5990 but don't remember the outcomes. Would suggest you google further and also contact Philips.

I understand your desire to get help, but bumping your own post after 25 minutes is considering extremely uncool here and doesn't make people likely to help you. You need to wait a full day before bumping.

Generally when a firmware upgrade goes back, it can't be fixed. You can attempt to do the firmware upgrade or try to flash an older version of the firmware. Neither usually works, but you might get lucky. Firmware problems like this usually need to be fixed by the manufacturer and the cost will probably exceed buying a new player. Unless there is a really strongly compelling reason for a firmware upgrade, it's really best not to do them. The chance of them going bad is not zero and when they go bad they usually brick the device in question. If it makes you feel any better, people have bricked expensive HDTVs that cost over $1000 US by attempting firmware upgrades that fail. In fact, it became so problematic that Samsung stopped making HDTV firmware updates available to consumers and they only officially allow them to be distributed via their repair channel and only to their authorized repair people.

  5. Sorry about the bump, I guess I was a little desperate at the moment. I guess the cost of the player is too low to make any more eforts to fix it.
What I would need from you guys is a GOOD ADVICE on deciding what to buy now. I think is time to buy a Blu-Ray player deck. What I'm looking for is something that can handle my old Onkyo TX-SR701. I mean that the player should have the analog output.
I also would like the player to have the feature of playing video files from USB media sticks or external Hard Drives.
But on top of everything I want it to be LOW BUDGET.
What is the best OPTION for something like this?

    Thanks in advance guys

  6. I forgot to mention that I've been reading about the OPPO BDP-80 and I think is wonderful, but is there any other player with same features for less money?

  7. You won't regret the Oppo - which will probably outlast several lesser machines. My five-year-old Oppo DVD player runs better than new thanks to firmware updates. Go for it.

  9. OPPO BDP-80 $289 on their website. It's the BDP-83 which is $500. Not that I have either; my son's PS3 handles the Blu-Ray admirably, while a WDTV media player takes care of newer stuff that my older Oppo doesn't understand.

Also depends what features you want. Xvid? H.264? Both PAL and NTSC? Regionless? There are hardware kits that claim to make the Oppos region free available on eBay.

    There's always https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers for information.
