what do you use to encode .avi?

i want to encode an .avi movie to .mp2 then multiplex with the audio
what would be the best software to encode ? THE BEST

software to multiplex audio and video? THE BEST

and the best to burn and authored dvd? THE BEST

What works "BEST" for me, may not necessarily work best for you, or anyone else, since we all have our own preferences and methods...
I use the very good free HCencoder, and author with either DVDauthor Gui or GuiforDVDAuthor, sometimes muxman..Burn with none other than Imgburn...
That works "BEST" for me...

There is no best.

For AVI to DVD conversion you can do it the one click way : ConvertXtoDVD, AVStoDVD, DVD Flick, FAVC etc.

Or the longer,manual method, as outlines above.

MainConcept Reference for me, encode video to M2V.

MP2 = audio
M2V = video

Mux in TMPGEnc Plus.

Author in DVDWS2.

What do you mean by best? Fastest? Easiest to use? Most flexible? Best image quality? You don't mind spending $20,000?

I use HcEnc and AviSynth. They're free, fast, and give very good results.

If you're willing to learn to use AviSynth, it's really hard to beat HCEnc, as jagabo and t0nee1 suggested.

It's not free, but I used to use an old copy of Cinema Craft Encoder (CCE). I've been so pleased with HCEnc that I just use it for what little AVI encoding I do.

Generally, it's a bad idea to ask what is "the best" because as suggested, "best" can mean different things to different people. For some, it means fastest and they don't care about anything but speed. Others crave image quality and could care less about speed. Still others may want the best image they can get at a reasonable cost.

The "best" method, would be to leave it alone. Aside from that, it depends on how it will be used.

the reason why i asked the question is because after i encode my .avi to dvd and burn it their seems to be errors while playing on dvd player!

EX: pixels scenes show with colorful squares, but when i play on computer it plays fine!

is their something wrong with dvd player? TOSHIBA SD6100

i used TMPGenc 4.0 xpress to convert .avi to dvd
and burned it with nero 9 burning rom

The problem could be a combination of bad media and nero. I suggest using only good media and burning with good software like imgburn.

Thanks, I checked it out! I know what i got to do now, buy better media and use imgburn!
Now what do i use to encode better quality with no errors while watching on dvd player? I use TMPGenc 4.0 express

guns1inger posted a number of possible tools, you might try one of those. Imho, FAVC seems a reasonable choice since it's easy to use and comes with HCEncoder which gives nice results. You could burn your conversion oiutput to DVD-RW (this way you won't have to worry too much about coasters; in case your player supports RWs) and check the results. If you don't like it try another converter...until you get what you want.

How is the sync off? Is it off by a fixed amount of time over the entire video? For example, the audio is always half a second late. Or does the sync drift constantly with time? For example, in sync at the start, 5 seconds 1/3 of the way through, 10 seconds 2/3 of the way through, 15 seconds at the end. Or something else? Like in sync for the first half of the movie, 1/2 second off for the rest.

MPG often has an audio skew, as in my first example. You fix this by adjusting the skew when you multiplex.

its out of sync a fixed amount! probably by a few ms or 1 sec. is their a way to check the length of audio and video?

You don't need to know the length of the audio and video. All you have to do is find out the amount of the delay and correct for it when remuxing.

Since 1000 ms=1 second, you might want to think about that statement.

After trial and error and 60 wasted dvd's im finally not a newbie no more (in my opinion)

What work's "THE BEST" for me is:
TMPGenc Xpress 4= encode .avi TO .m2v with no audio! (and also to mux .m2v and .ac3)
ULEAD Dvd Movie Factory =author DVD
IMGBURN= For all my burning
VirtualdubMOD = to demux audio from video and save to .wav
EncWAVtoAC3 = for audio conversation to .ac3
DGpulldown =for 3:2 pulldown on media that is 25 pal fps
And a bitrate Calculator!
