the last time i shrunk a dvd9 to dvd5 was back in 2004/2005 and back then I always had very mixed results using dvd shrink. often during playback of the compressed dvd there would be several skips and pauses.

I have 2x dvd9 discs i want to compress to dvd5 for a backup but unsure of the best application to use, i want to avoid the old dvd shrink if possible which i see hasn't been updated for years.

if anyone can give me some advice it would be most appreciated!

DVD Shrink is still good for what it does, and for small reductions, it is still the fastest option. If you have larger reductions, DVD Rebuilder with HCEnc as the encoder.

Agree with guns1inger. DVD Shrink is still good for smaller compression values. Otherwise use DVD Rebuilder with HCEnc.

I've used DVD Shrink since 2004 and never do I think it caused skips/pauses. Might be your Burn Speed, Burning Program, DVD Player, Media, etc.

Usually a symptom of cheap media.

I also agree that dvdrb with hcenc is the way to go now.

    thanks guys

i had a look at a few programs but as mentioned dvd shrink still seems to be the most popular, i am giving it a go now.

selected deep analysis, maximum smoothness, also changed the maximum dvd size down to 4000MB to further prevent any glitches.

EDIT: most probably could of been the media i was burning to back then, i have imation on hand which doesn't fail me for 1 to 1 backups or other video projects so hopefully it will go well.

    skips/pauses is from either
    (A) cheap media
    (B) trying to use the computer while it was transcoding
