VCDgear can extract the MPEG-1 info out of the *.DAT files. No conversion involved so no data loss (it's equivalent to ripping a DVD).

Commerical SVCDs were extraordinarily rare. I have one. It says "Super VCD" on it. The format never took off anywhere and I only heard of a very small number of movies being in that format. Mine is "Rambo 3". If you have an SVCD, it will say "SVCD" or "Super VCD" on it. If you have VCD, it usually says so. The odds are quite high that you only have VCD. Examine a *.DAT file in something like the free Teco BitRateViewer if you want. If it says MPEG-1 video then it's VCD. If it says MPEG-2 video then it's SVCD. GSpot may also be able to tell you what you have by opening a *.DAT fle with it.

Don't know. Sorry. It may be two years since I last used VCDGear on a VCD and I only had 1 file to extract.

  6. Just look at the video size. If it's 480x480, then you have SVCD. Otherwise, it's plain VCD.

  9. Well bitrateviewer didn't wok but Gspot did ...they are mpeg1... oh well I don't have these videos in my collection so mpeg1 is better than no mpeg at all

Mission accomplished ...well sort of only have to do about a hundred disc

    Thanks everyone for your help

  10. Hi guys i ran into some trouble ...it split some of teh dat files into 2 mpg files and I can't seem to get them joined and working ...I hope you will check out teh new thread I am starting

    here is the thread

Ok well that thread is now closed

    Hi all

I had soem great help getting my Music Video Vcds converted from dat to mpeg I have now ran into a problem with a few

When ripping the dat files in to mpeg some of the files got split and won't play,ONe will play but it seems like it get's cut off at the end ...however the second part won't play .

I tried merging with a tmpgenc won't even load and with mpegstreamclip it werges and then the file won't play

This is what I get from windows media player

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

Any suggestions ...is tehre a different methpd of ripping these to my hard drive that may work or some other way to merge these files

    Thanks
    Ed
