    Hello,

I've shooted some video's with an Sony D8 camcorder and Nokia N95.
Now I've edited it in Vegas, but the problem is Sony's footage is interlaced and Nokia's Progressive.
Wich is the best way to encode? Interlaced or Progressive? I will do 15MBs MPEG2.

It would be logical to keep the interlaced interlaced and progressive progressive, but that isn't possible.
And this time more then half the footage is shooted with the N95

  2. it depends what the goal and target is (how are you going to view this)?

The most important thing is I want to minimize motion loss and archive. The video is 4:3 and I want to watch trough TV Out (crt screen for now)
Playing interlaced on computer isn't a problem since VLC can deinterlace. So it isn't really a problem for me how to view it.

  4. The only way to minimize motion loss (if you mean keep it smooth, and the temporal resolution) is either to keep the interlacing (and bob-deinterlace on playback) , or bob-deinterlace to progressive

However, if you progressive footage was shot at a lower fps, it won't intermix very nicely.

e.g. if you had 30i (or 60 fields per second) footage, you would need 60p footage to mix nicely. If you only had 30p progressive footage, it is at 1/2 the temporal sampling

    Sony's footage is 25fps and Nokia up to 30fps, but I'm choosing 25fps, that isn't a problem.
So it's better to export in Vegas interlaced?

  6. If you want to preserve the motion , interlace is better

25fps interlaced is 25 frames per second or 50 fields per second. When you bob deinterlace it's silky smooth because you get the full 50 samples of time. When you single rate deinterlace, its 25 sample per second. You can test this for yourself. Play in VLC normal deinterlace vs. bob deinterlace, the difference should be clear

The problem is your nokia doesn't have the same temporal resolutions. The footage only takes 30 moments in time, not 50. Do you see the problem? In order to intermix them, vegas will either blend frames (blurry and choppy) or duplicate frames (very choppy)- you can test this out for yourself. When you use default behaviour, it will blend, when you "disable resample" it will duplicate

I thought I've tested it, but I didn't see a difference. Probably one of the footage wasn't interlaced..
I will export again and look. But I do have used earlier 30fps to 25fps. The most footage of Nokia is 27fps, so that wasn't really a problem (but now Im doing interlacing, another story). But I will check again.

I didn't really see a difference. The Nokia often shoots 26 or 27fps average, so it's almost 25 fps.
If I do 30 fps it becomes really annoying sometimes (on Nokia footage).
    So I choose 25fps interlaced. I think that's a great average.

On the Nokia, I hate it that it has a variable framerate, I always have to guess/decide wich framerate will be used for the next project, I hate it! I don't know why they can't just choose 25fps or 30fps....
But Thanks for your help and suggestions poisondeathray
