I need to share about twenty or so old movies with friends and family. They are currently stored in DV format and I want to find a tool that can batch convert them all at once (or rather one after the other). My plan was to que up each file with RipBot264 or Handbrake and then let 'er rip. The problem with both of these programs is that they recognize the AR as 1.5 and I the only way I can see to correct the AR to respective 16:9 or 4:3 (there are some of each) is to change the actual pixel count in the output frame. This I do not want to do.

As of now I've tried rendering out a high bit-rate MP4 with Vegas and things look good, but I can only do one at a time.

Am I missing something in RipBot or Handbrake? Or is there another tool I should consider?

  2. most programs assume square pixel, unless specified otherwise

enter the pixel aspect ratio in the custom command box (called SAR or sample aspect ratio in x264 terminology)

    for NTSC:

    --sar 8:9 = for 4:3 DAR
    --sar 32:27 = for 16:9 DAR

So I've found some interesting things. I've got about 100 DV clips that have been captured with either Vegas' 3rd party capture program OR with Windows Import Video. Those captured with the windows program appear to be properly flagged with their respective PAR's. When I set up a few to be batch encoded to x264 mp4's using RipBot they are all recognized in their proper PAR and the resulting MP4 is perfect. However those captured using Vegas are not flagged. RipBot reads them as 1.5 AR (SQUARE).

I can actually run the DV files through Movie maker with no re-compression and then they seem to automatically get flagged properly and I'm off to the races. But I have 100+ files!

So you're suggesting that I use Handbrake and change the ANAMORPHIC setting from "None" to "Custom" and then input your above settings...correct?

So it gives me four adjustable settings below it.

    Modulus

    Display Width

    PAR Width

    PAR Height

When I input your settings (32:27) for the Pixel width and Height if gives me an entirely new display size at the bottom (853x480).

So will this actually add more pixels and just keep them at 1:5 PAR?
