  1. I get this error C00D1199: Cannot play the file
But I have divx and fddshow and wmp10 and real media player. Any idea?

  2. Try vlc or kmplayer or mpchc , if they can't play it, the file is likely to be damaged

Use gspot or mediainfo to identify the codec

  3. VLC works. But I thought fddshow usually has the codec that plays 90% of all avi/mpg/mp4, etc

  4. So what are the codecs? It could also be that the file isn't really an AVI file and you don't have an appropriate file reader/splitter installed.

Not all of ffdshow's decoders are necessarily enabled, in a default install. As poisondeathray mentioned, use GSpot or Mediainfo - first to verify that it actually is an AVI, then to see what codecs were used to encode the video and audio. VLC has a way to check this, but the last time I looked at it, it didn't provide as much information as I'd liked.

Once you know what codecs it uses, you can check ffdshow's configurations (all three of them - VfW video, DirectShow video, and audio), and see whether or not ffdshow supports them, whether or not they're set to 'disabled.'
