Hey, I'm new here and I apologize if this is in the wrong place. I really hope someone can help me though.

A few years back, I bought a combo DVD/VCR so I could transfer some old video tapes to DVD.

    It's a Sylvania Model # DVR90VE Serial #: DV220SL8

For the most part, it's done the job of transferring everything I need admirably, but there's always been a few kinks that need worked out. I've fought with it countless times and even tried getting help from the company but nothing really seems to help.

Some tapes that I put in will have picture, but no sound. Now there is a sort of hiss that will go up and down with the volume. And once I could swear I heard a bit of dialogue albeit distorted and only for a second. What's really odd though is that I'll have two or three movies on the same tape, and one won't have the sound and another will.

To further confound me, some tapes will play perfectly fine and the DVD transfer is a snap. Later though, when you try playing the burned DVD on another player, guess what? No sound. Although, it does have sound when you put it in the DVD player I transferred it on.

So, is there any help out there for me? I have some seriously rare B-movies on some old video tapes that won't last forever and the clock's ticking.

Can you adjust the tracking on your VCR? The audio is recorded right on the edge of the tape, so is the first thing to go, but sometimes playing with the tracking can help.

In general you'd be much better off using a high quality (presumably VHS) player attached to a video capture card to make your recordings. Then you could optimise the results before recording to DVD and even do the audio and video separately, for optimum results. Some of the last generation of HQ VHS players have built in error-correction and optimisation "gizmos" for better standard VHS playback.

I appreciate the help. I can try the tracking part of it, but as for the second part?

not the best when it comes to technology. I might end up having to just buy a better player
