  1. I need a good upconverting dvd player that can play the backups I buy from my local stores. It is mostly movies. I'm not sure on their region but I need a good dvd player that is region free or can play all kinds of backup medias.

Pioneer 1080p HDMI DVD Player (DV-220V-K)

Pioneer 1080p Upconverting DVD Player (DV-420V-K)

Sony 1080p Upconverting DVD Player With DivX (DVPNS718H)

This is a list from my local Best Buy. The items are on sale. Which one is best for backups?

I wanted the Philips 5990 but it is sold out everywhere. I'm interested in the Sony DVPNS718H the most.

    The Philips DV3980 can playback PAL/NTSC, VCD, SVCD, CD'S, MP3, WMA, DVD-R/+, DVDRW, CDRW & JPEG's.

Sony and Pioneer one's are not going to be region free. You'd have to check the DVD hack section to see if they can be done via a hack firmware upgrade. I've never seen any hacks that work with those brands. It's usually the no name brands that can be hacked to be region free. Philips is good to have those features already on their dvd players.
    Just my 2 cents!
