  1. Hi.

Just bought WD TV and was amazed by how good it will play all my movies directly from my external harddrive.
But soon found out it has its limits. Most of my movies it will play with subtitles without any problem, but some of them I can't get it to play with subtitles. When ever i try to play them from my computer, there are no problem, if I burn them on a DVD_RW and play them on my DVDplayer, the subtitles are there. But when I try to play them from WD TV, it tells me, that there are no subtitles awailable. The only thing I can see could be the difference is, that the videos it will play with subtitle has a file called VIDEO_TS.VOB and the one who hasn't wont play the subtites. But is that the problem, because I've read elsewhere that VIDEO_TS.VOB has nothing to do with subtitles.

    Any help will be apriciated.

Tommybj - I have this player too (I am talking about the original WD TV and NOT at all about the new WD TV Live, which may or may not be different) and I want to warn you about something. It does not play SUB/IDX subtitles reliably. I have only been able to get SRT subs to work reliably with it. It will try to play SUB/IDX subs, but it drops about 10-20% of them in my experience. I've had no choice but to convert any SUB/IDX subs to SRT before using it.

It's generally best to name the subtitles the same name as the video file. For example, MYMOVIE.AVI and MYMOVIE.SRT should be fine. Not sure what will happen if the names aren't the same before the period (.). It may not work if the name prior to the period isn't the same.

VOB files contain the subtitles within them - that's why they work without problems.

  3. Hi jman98.

Mine is the original WD TV with the newest firmware, think it *.75. The problem is that I'm not trying to play Avi-files but only DVD-files ripped directly from the DVD. So I have all the extracted files in folder VIDEO_TS and as I wrote at first, no problem with computer or DVD-RW only WD TV. I know VOB files contains the subtitles, but for some reason they wont allways show them in WD TV.

Baldrick, I'll look into the link you sent me to see if they have the answer and solution.
