  1. I have close to 500 dvds and wish to put some of my favorites on a hard drive to watch through my network using the Western Digital Media Player Live. I don't want to use .vob and only want the movie on the drive. I want the BEST possible format to view them in.
What program and what format type is the best for viewing? Also I only want the movie. How can I only get the movie in a file?

    Thank you,
    Craig

I also use DVDFab with h264 mkv setting. The problem have is audio sync problems on older movies. Newer movies no problems at all.

Simple would be a program like VOB2MPG. It just takes the MPEG-2 video out of the decrptyed VOB container and creates one large MPEG-2 file. No quality loss. You could also process them through a simple program like DVDShrink to remove parts you didn't want, with no recompression, but VOB2MPG does that fairly well. Both are freeware.

Most other methods will require recompression and some quality loss, and will take a fair amount of time to process. But if you are limited on space, recompression to a format like MKV will save space. WDTV plays quite a few formats, so nothing really special required.

  4. MakeMKV will convert only the movie with chapters and any subs you might want to keep.

The MKV is made up of the original MPEG2/AC3 streams, so it preserves quality, but the price you pay is that the files will usually be quite large, averaging around 4-5GB.

If you want to convert to another format to save space then something like Handbrake will convert DVDs to mp4, but as with any conversion, you will lose a little quality.
