A small city. Large enough to have all the desired services and small enough to not have most of the urban problems.

How about a small rural town.
Small rural town in Eastern Oklahoma.
Population 1,600
Its a great place to live. Only downside is there is no competition for my local telco so I have slow dsl that cost a lot. 1mb for $60 (well the whole phone bill is 60, the actual internet part of my phone bill is $45). I don't even have a phone hooked up. I just have to have it for internet service. Unfortunately they don't offer internet only service. I'll sacrifice some of those luxurys for the peace of mind of living in a small town with practically no crime.Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again") -

How big should it be to call it big??
I live in a city with around 800.000-900.000 population, it's getting really hard to find a parking place... -
I think "big" starts at about 100,000 by most methods of accounting.

live in a state that's a bunch of islands in the Pacific ocean...called Honolulu, Hawaii which is the "Big City" by our standards....and no I don't live in a grass hut with hula girls at my door....yes we have internet here in Hawaii...

I live in a township with a population of about 7000, across the street from a small city of about 22,000, which adjoins a big city of about 200,000. When I bought my land it was on a dirt road and adjoined a farmer's field. I felt like I was in the country. Now the road is paved and there's an apartment complex behind us. It sucks.

My wife and I grew up in: "The Birth Place of Television," which was a great city until the late 1970s. Now we live a few towns over in Small Town, 45K people. Used to be an quasi-industrial town with Westinghouse, GE and Lysol here. None of them have lived here since the 60s. Hartz Mountain will be gone by this year. Oddly still a vital town, but needs to grow up sooner better than later.
Sarah Vaughn is still buried here though!
And, we have some great restaurants.

I live in the Sunshine state in a city whose latest census was 1,313,228 people, but a 30 minute drive puts us in the middle of nowhere.

Ah you live in Rigby, Idaho?

Philo T. Farnsworh got the idea of electronic scanned imaging while ploughing fields in Idaho but he developed television at Green St. San Francisco.

Contender Vladimir Zworykin was over in Pittsburgh lost to Farnsworth in the RCA patent wars.
I was fortunate to meet Zworkin two years before he died.

PS: Between a small city (outside city limits) and a town here, 45 miles to the nearest Frys Electronics store (also Costco, Walmart, SAM's).Last edited by edDV; 26th Jul 2010 at 12:01.

No, further East EdDV.
Think Dumont.
The main sign into town says (or used to say if someone has stolen it by now) 'Birth Place of Television,' but it would probably be more correct to say 'Birthplace of Broadcast Television.'

Oh yeah, and the TV show from the 70s, "Makin' It" was set there. But, we don't talk about that
Haven't lived there in 18 years, but I still consider it my home town

Sydney, Oz population around 4.4 million and growing and growing as you blink! I live about 7 miles from downtown Sydney - too many cars, grid lock everyday, cranky drivers but I love it! Great coffee shops and restaurants, 12 cinemas down the road from my place and 150+ nationalities and food to match. Average cost of a free standing brick house is au$650k and still climbing. I would die in a rural setting - love variety and change..

My Avatar info says ... California ......... so here goes ... you will have to guess the rest ...
I live ... 40 miles ... South of Fresno California ... Population : 1/2 million and that is not counting the cities blended into Fresno ... Selma and Clovis
About 20 miles East of my town is ... Visalia .... has an estimated population of 125,921
Visalia (pronounced /vɪˈseɪljə/ vi-SAYL-yə) is a Central California city situated in the heart of California’s agricultural San Joaquin Valley, approximately 230 miles (370 km) southeast of San Francisco and 190 miles (310 km) north of Los Angeles. Visalia is the 46th largest city in the state of California and the 204th largest in the United States.[1] Often referred to as the Gateway to the Sequoias and nicknamed The Jewel of the Valley, Visalia has an estimated population of 125,921[2] and spans over 28.6 square miles (74.1 km2) in Central California. Additionally, the Visalia Metropolitan Area is home to approximately 426,276 residents.[3][4] Its inhabitants are known as "Visalians". In 2007, Visalia was named the 3rd fastest growing city in California and 19th fastest growing city in the U.S.[5]
Settled in 1852, Visalia is the oldest permanent inland settlement between Stockton and Los Angeles. As the county seat and largest city of Tulare County, Visalia serves as the economic center to the region known as the Sequoia Valley, one of the most productive single agricultural areas in the United States.[6][7] Visalia lies within miles of the tallest mountain range in the contiguous United States, the Sierra Nevada (U.S.) (see Mount Whitney, which is located in Tulare and Inyo counties), and is the closest major city to Sequoia National Park, home to some of the largest living things on Earth, the Giant Sequoia trees. It is known as "Where The Valley Meets The Giants."
And ... 10 miles away ... going West ... is ...
Lemoore, CA, population 23,873, is located in California's Kings county, about 30.9 miles from Fresno and 77.1 miles from Bakersfield.
Through the 90's Lemoore's population has grown by about 45%. It is estimated that in the first 5 years of the past decade the population of Lemoore has grown by about 15%. Since 2005 Lemoore's population has grown by about 6%.
Lemoore's property crime levels tend to be about the same as California's average level. The same data shows violent crime levels in Lemoore tend to be lower than California's average level.

It has anything. I'm 4km from the beach and 1km away from Tayon Yuden's main European supplier. Many bars / clubs / pubs / discos around.
