Just got a new dual-core notebook running Windows 7 64-bit. I'd like to take advantage of 64 bit performance for video conversion but don't know what to use. I'm also used to using a Mac so I'm completely clueless as to what's available in the windows world. Mostly I'll be converting videos of varying formats to DVD, including the ever-so obnoxious MKV file with text based subtitles that are always a nightmare to work with (for me anyway). On the Mac I use Visualhub for pretty much everything and Toast for the MKV files with subs (slow but it works).
What should I look into getting for my new Windows 7 lappy?

For the most part there's very little performance difference between 32 bit apps and 64 bit apps. And when there is it's because of the ability to address more than 4 GB of memory -- which your laptop probably doesn't have.

OK, good answer. One less thing I need to worry about, and yeah my laptop only has 2gb. Thanks! One less thing I need to worry about, and yeah my laptop only has 2gb. Thanks!

Some programs are able to optimize dual or quad core CPU's, VideoStudio X2 is one of them. The problem is many video editing programs don't work on Windows 7 64 bit, not to mention peripherals made before 2007.
I'm telling my friends that are thinking of buying a new computer(or upgrading) with less than 4GB of RAM to buy the 32 bit version.

Well I just tried ConvertXtoDVD and I'm very impressed. Seems to do exactly what I want. What amazes me is how unbelievably fast it is compared to what I've been doing on my Mac (original Intel Mac, far from what's available nowadays). I wish they made an app this good for OSX.
