  1. Not sure if this is the correct category, I'm a noob to these forums, so it qualifies that way at least....

I'm having trouble, as the title suggested, burning DVD-DL media. Up until now I've been burning DVD's (the normal 4.7Gb variety) without issue. Some of the files are too big to fit on those disks, so they've been left on my hard drive. The problem there is now the drive is filling up, and this system - my recording studio system isn't intended to be clogged up with all these video files.

What's been working for me to date...

With my Ubuntu laptop system, I take the AVI files and use DVD Styler to create the disk image (ISO). I give the project a menu, add the title and let DVDStyler do it's thing - create ISO. I don't burn it directly since Ubuntu seems to have an issue with my DVD burner. That's really no big deal though. Next, I send that file over to my "Studio" computer and with pretty much any burn s/w, burn the ISO. At this point the DVD (4.7G or less) is finished and plays quite nicely from my PC DVD drive. We are satisfied.

Now, tried the same thing with the larger files (>4.7G) and supposedly it completed successfully, but wouldn't open in VLC player. Did some investigating and realized I may not have had the break layer set properly because the ISO burning s/w I use (Alcohol 120%) didn't ask me to deal with that. O.k., one coaster.

Grabbed a few freeware utilities as a couple guides suggested, IMGBURN and AShampoo are a couple I tried. With IMGBurn and AShampoo, I get a DVD burned, but it stutters. This is the problem, the stuttering. I guess I'm creating the DVD-DL disk o.k., but playback sucks. The source ISO, if mounted as a virtual disk plays great.

Most of the guides are explaining how to author from scratch, so I have to jump into the middle somewhere, as most of these steps are done (either before me, or by me with DVD Styler). I tried using DVDShrink to get the size down to less than 4.7G. The result with that was pathetic, and another coaster. This one though was only a single layer disk.

My PC is more than up to the task of playing a disk: Intel P4 2.6Ghz, 2 Gb RAM, 320GB WD 7200rpm, 250Gb Seagate 7200rpm, ATI Radeon 9600 series w/ DVI out to Sharp Aquos 42" 1080p. XP Pro, SP3. I know it's not top of the line, but it works fine.

So, RE: DVD-DL. What am I doing wrong? I don't even care if the discs play in my JVC DVD player, I just want to stop creating coasters.

Thanks for the read, Hope someone can offer some insight.

Not sure if Ubuntu has anything to do with it but, why not just burn the ISO created by DVDstyler with IMGBurn...Does Imgburn have an issue with your burner?..
Also FYI, most around here recommend/prefer using Verbatim DVD+R DL media..Try them..

    1. Use ONLY Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. Anything else will stutter.
    2. Burn ONLY with ImgBurn. And I would suggest using the Build mode and just drop in the VIDEO_TS folder (allowing Imgburn to automatically build the ISO correctly with the best selectable layer break).

Unless you are doing those two things, you can expect more coasters and more stuttering.

    Cheers.

  4. t0nee1 RE: Ubuntu. I don't think it does, it's just an OS. DVD Styler is available for Linux and Windows. Only chose to use that as it what I happened to have at the time - and being new to DVD authoring, it was easy to use. Remember regular DVD-R discs work great. That should rule out Ubuntu.

Last night before going to bed, I took the ISO from DVD Styler and used both IMGBurn and AShampoo with the same horrible results. I was beginning to think media myself. Don't shoot me, but you can tell me I should know better than to try using...umm.... memorex. I know, I know.....

FILMBOSS08 I'll give the IMGBURN s/w a good go once I get some Verbatim disks (+DL).

    Anything else I should know?

I recommend that you do your first Verbatim burn with ImgBurn at the slowest speed possible. A few people have had weird problems that were solved by burning at slower speeds. Let's try to get you one good burn that works first at the slowest speed and then if that is OK you can experiment with faster burns later.
