  1. Hey... i've followed quite a few dvd to avi conversion tutorials on here and none of them turn out too well.

XVID4PSP: works on some of my dvds, others it includes the dvd menus at the start of the video and the audiois way out of sync.

Fairusewizard 2.9: the quality for a 1.4GB avi file was HORRIBLE.

simpledivx: crahses part way though the conversion.

Handbrake: video quality was good. the aspect ratio was 4:3 instead of 16:9, even though i set the res at 16:9.

So, whats the best way to convert a dvd to avi, while keeping the 5.1ch audio?[s:f7a7a0a549][/s:f7a7a0a549]

Generally I use VOB2MPG to extract the video and audio into a single MPG file, and convert from there.

For Xvid/Divx avi I prefer AutoGK.

I use AUtogk, Staxrip and Megui(it may look a bit advanced but you can use the built on one click option).

    Welcome MoltenTesseract

    1:
works on some of my dvds
Most common issues are created by trying to use programs with direct access to the dvd medium ... best to rip content to hard drive using DVDFab HD Decrypter ... to prevent programs from running into common issues during conversion process's use movie only feature ... and remember it needs to be updated to keep up with newer titles.

    2:
the quality for a 1.4GB avi file was HORRIBLE
True enough ... and I can name a few recent release's which are border line garbage ... and they put that on dvd these days ... but this has mostly to do with settings for the encoder used.

    3:
crahses part way though the conversion
This is why some applications work and some dont ... after a while it becomes clear on which applications to avoid for specific tasks.

A little bit like using the term "FREE" as part of an applications name ... it's suggestive and gives the wrong intention.

    4:
    4:3 instead of 16:9
Use gspot to determine DAR ... if incorrect make the change in handbreaks video tabbed section

This could also indicate a dvd structure which includes two different aspect ratio versions or multi-angle title.

    a) Rip dvd in movie mode only using DVDFab HD Decrypter to hard drive ... this removes menu's, extra's, angle's
    b) Use an appropriate application for the conversion which provides adequate features ... many available

  5. Hey. I'm still having issues with getting good quality.

I'm now using vob2mpg to extract the mpg and feeding that into every program i can find. but for a 1.4GB movie, the quality i keep getting is far worse than the original dvd.

I've seen 'scene' releases that are 700MB and have better quality than my 1.4GB files... am i doing something wrong?
