  1. Hey guys,
just got this philips 712 one and immediately burned a vcd to test the vcd function (i toasted a anivcd futurama episode).
Well, actually the player does a good job, the only problem is the movie keeps hanging every few minutes! sometimes the it continues after a view seconds, sometimes its stuck in an infinite loop and sometimes it hangs completely.. so i have to fast forward some seconds/minutes and press play again...

I'm burning in Nero 5.5, set to PAL, got PAL tv, and the dvd player is set to PAL. As i said, when its playing, its fine (image quality, sound, ratio aspect..) I've always set to close the cd after burning. btw, the cd is 100% clean and has no scratches on it which would cause these hangs.. So, is this a known problem of a player and if yes, how can i fix it. Or does the player just dont like my CD-Rs and just gotta buy some others? I'm using OCTRON (german brand i think, no1 should know them) Please help me guys, this shit drives me mad..
Ah yeah, and if someone knows where i can get a firmware update for this thing.. =)

    bye Raoul

  2. I've had the same player for about four months and I have been experiencing the same problem. But, in my case I never had more than five skips during the whole movie. I burn my VCD's with Nero as well. I have used different kind of CD-R's, with same results.
I have heard other people complain about this, therefore one can only come to conclusion that it's players fault and AFAIK, at present there is no remedy for this problem. Other than that, Philips DVD712 is a good player, it can play DVD, audio CD, VCD, SVCD, CD-R, CD-RW and MP3.

You're not alone, I'm having similar problems with my DVD 622. However, if all Philips DVD players had this problem there should be a lot more post like this. Many has claimed to have no problems at all with their 622, so I think there's something wrong with just my player, not the model 622 in general

I have a 712, and all I can say: It plays almost every VCD and SVCD very fine, but there are 3 minor things to say:
    1. Never exceed the datarate specified for VCD or SVCD. This will cause the player to skip parts of the movie.
    2. SVCD cannot fast forward or reverse, but that is no problem for me, because the resume function is ok.
    3. On VCD and SVCD it is very problematic with dirty CDs, then it skips and hangs a lot. Be careful your CDRs are clean when you burn them!

I just got a DVD712AT - I'm in the states and this is NTSC.

I am able to play VCD 2.0 disks fine but I have not been able to make a SVCD that will play the audio, all of the ones I have made play the only the video. I also made one from the test file here on this site (http://www.vcdimager.org/pub/vcdimager/examples/test_svcd/) .

I did not see a firmware upgrade for this on http://www.dvdregionhacks.com/html/regionmods/players/p/players/philipsfirmware.html.

Anyone have any ideas on what might be going on?

does Philips support SVCD chapter ?
This should be a way to reduce the problem (jumping for N next chapters = moving fast).

Does it works under philips ?

I have a phillips 622 the daddy of the 722 and think it is a dream come true. It has no problems playing most of my svcds and vcds which are on pcline discs which are eXtremely cheapy. My only annoy with this player is its lack of a svcd scan function HOWEVER i have been told by a source that the scan function is availible on the 622 however new firmwarte is neede which i can't find.
