My DVD burner is on its last legs, apparently.

If I insert a disc, software does not recognise it unless I atttempt a "load" several times.
When it does, it works fine, reading and writing. Never a bad burn yet.

So I'll be shopping for a new drive next I get into town, but in the meantime, is there any software that can keep attempting to load a DVD, or a command line that can be scripted to do so, so I don't have to keep clicking the button over and over till it works?

Not that I'm aware of, but I suppose you could write some sort of script. Maybe someone here would have an idea for that.

You may run into another problem, though. If an optical drive fails to read a disc six consecutive times, the OS may revert the drive to PIO mode and your reads and writes will be very slow, along with high CPU usage. You might want to check the DMA/PIO status of that drive on occasion. That's generally a problem with PATA drives. I'm not sure if SATA drives share the same problem.

I've had this problem for a while, was several retries now its dozens.

However, when it does finally read then it burns at full speed as normal, so that's not a problem.

Also, I use Win2k, and I don't think that does the fallback, it appears to be in DMA mode in Device Manager anyway.

Presumably until it recognises a disc is present, there are no "errors" as far as Windows is concerned. In any case, it's still and always has been in DMA mode.
Do you actually have anything useful to say, or were you just looking through old posts to find someone to smirk at?

    Hi AlanHK,

    please don't be sarcastic.
I only can tell things from my own experience and I've never experienced such a behaviour with any w2k version I've used.

    Hi AlanHK,

    please don't be sarcastic.
Please don't be an insulting, patronising jerk.
And please don't reply to a months' old thread if you have nothing useful to say.

For the benefit of anyone else, I've got a new burner that does not have that problem, so this is purely of academic interest now.
