You could try a data recovery program, like CDRoller or ISOBuster (free versions), but I can't make any promises that they will find anything to recover. If ISObuster finds a track on on the disc, there's a good chance you'll recover something.

  4. dvd-r never needs formatting. so either is wasn't a dvd-r or something is very messed up with it.

Try CDRoller. I examined the recent version, 8.60.50. Their Recover DVD Video finds and displays all tracks recorded by camcorder on DVD-R too. Here, you can also try to ignore the disc state. I suppose they try to read so called "raw sectors". However, as far as i know, this depends on the DVD drive installed in your system. But, maybe, you will be lucky... Good luck!

If it actually is a -R, it wasn't written to properly.

If he used quick format, which I recall as the default in most Windows environments, all of the data is left intact in the RW. I recommend he uses CDRoller to find out.

    I also recommend trying CDRoller.
I just got back from my honeymoon and tried to watch a recording of our wedding. It was shot on a Sony mini-dvd camcorder. My brother in law forgot to finalize the dvd-r disc. So of course it wouldnt work in any dvd player and showed up as a blank disc on my computer. I figured I was screwed but I tried a bunch of programs I found online. After going through a few that didn't work I tried CDRoller. The trial version found the missing files on the disc so I went ahead and paid a little for the 30day full version. A few clicks and I had the video, but no sound. I e-mailed their support and within a couple hours I had a reply!! Seems all I needed to do was download a codec and then I had sound! Definitely a good program. Id dl the trial, see if it finds anything. worth a shot, and its free to see if it recognizes anything on the disc

That's never stopped anyone from posting before. Just wait until 1+ year from now when some new person finds this post and adds to it trying to "help" the original poster. Yes future numbskull poster, I am talking about YOU!
