I made the mistake of erasing a number of my -RW discs with my computer software (either Vegas 7, DVD Architect or Nero). These were discs that I had previously recorded in Video mode with my Sony RDR-VX500 recorder deck. Now the deck refuses to recognize those discs. I get an error message saying that the discs can "neither be recorded nor played" and it spits them out. I've tried both quick erase and full erase methods with all of my DVD software. None of it seems to return my discs to a format that my Sony deck recognizes.

Is there a way to fix this? Obviously an -RW disc can be written again. Is there computer software out there that can reformat my -RW disks so my Sony DVD recorder will recognize them again?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Did you try ImgBurn ?

I had it a few times after Nero throw'd an error at burning. Nero couldn't erase them anymore but ImgBurn stated the disk was unformatted and did a full formatting. After that even Nero could read and burn them again.

You need to format the disks after you erase them to be ablle to reuse again.

  4. You may have to buy new discs. This issue has been discussed on this fourm in the past -- some units do not like it when you mix -RW media among recorders. I had this same issue with my JVC DVD recorder. I used the -RW discs that I'd used for years in my JVC in a Phillips DVD and after this the JVC was unable to read them. I tried erasing and reformatting them but got the same failure message no matter what.

I have that problem with my Sony recorders. The solution (which may not be an option for you) is to erase them with my Panasonic recorder, which is not so picky, and then record something with the Panny, finalize it and then reformat it with the Sony. It's cumbersome but it works. You might be able to burn a DVD from your computer onto the disc and then format it again with the Sony.

  6. Yes the last mentioned option, just burn a small set of dvd compliant files to the disc on your PC and insert in the Sony.

With RW discs going at about $1.25 at Costco you do have to ask if the time is worthwhile.

  7. Use img-burn. Make a good copy (disc.iso) .from a recorded disc from your Sony.. then burn this image back to the disc (any disc) that you want to re-use in your sony.
Surely your Sony has a format function? or maybe a new firmware?
