Here's what the total dipstick said:
Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Jack Tretton said in an interview with Forbes earlier this week that a Sony victory in this generation's console war is good for the industry.

(Credit: SCEA "In an industry that has certainly had its challenges this year, we like to say that the environment where the PlayStation wins is best for this industry," Tretton told Forbes. "We have a brand that can play on a worldwide basis, to young and old, male and female, where our competition tends to be relegated to select regions or to select consumer audiences."
Tretton's comments came after the SCEA chief told Forbes that Nintendo, the current console leader, "delivers a casual, youth-oriented entertainment experience."
Of course, Tretton's statements echo what has been coming out of the Sony camp for quite a while. Sony has made it clear that it views Microsoft as its direct competitor. And although Nintendo sells far more consoles than both Microsoft and Sony, it seems that, as always, Sony doesn't believe that Nintendo is a real competitor. continued...

I don't think so. I mainly use my ps3 for movies (bluray and upconverted dvds). I've also heard that many are not as happy with the online service for gameplay on psn. I haven't played on any online games for ps3 so I can't comment. Though they did do some on the Xplay video game show and had problems connecting (the Mr Sark Battelfield 1943 challenge for those that watch).
I love xbox live. I think its just so smooth and developed. THe psn store is ok but a little too spartan for my likes. The xbox dashboard with its continuous updates and makeovers is intuitive and easy to look at.
Basically if a game is on ps3 and xbox 360 I'll buy the 360 version everytime. I also don't like that you can't swap battery packs on the standard ps3 controllers. That is nice for the 360 - just keep a pack charged and swap on the go.
The Nintendo WII does have its place. I disagree that they are "dilutiing" the market. Who knows what switches a casual wii gamer into a hardcore halo/gears of war/deadspace shooter fanatic? You never know - but you won't find out if you don't get them interested in gaming in the first place.
The Wii is kindof like a wading pool for first timers. Get them interested and see if the waters just right. Then they can go into the deep end for the ps3 or 360 or high end pc gaming.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Well when i finally came to the point of getting a new system, PS3 or 360, and i have always been a Playstation fan even though 99% of anything else to do with sony i avoid like the plague, but also a BIG SNES fan, i ended up going with a 360 just because sony screwed themselves by removing features from the PS3!!
The big one for me was backwards compatibility with older PS games!
And even though for some time i seriously considered the Wii, i just came to the conclusion it seemed to "kiddy" of a system, too much of a "niche" system, and only appealed to me for the fact you could get the old original NES/SNES games for it, but i have them anyways for the original SNES & PS2 :P
Just a never ending vicious cycle!!

Considering how much noise they made about the PS3 being backward compatible with PS1 & PS2, I was quite shocked when they (very quietly) announced that PS2 compatibility was going away. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot! At first they had a deal going on like the 360, where certain PS2 titles could be played if you downloaded and installed an 'emulator' for each title that would allow you to play. But that got shit-canned pretty quick. If you managed to get those files downloaded back then you're good to go, but you can't get it now.
Oh, but wait - it still plays original PlayStation games! This is fine for me, as I have a ton of them, but for most consumers this is a huge 'who give a shit?' feature."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

And regarding the dpad - that is only a concern really for retro style games. Any modern game rarely touches the dpad except for some occasional menu based systems for some games.
One thing I am really looking forward to for the 360 is PROJECT NATAL. If it even lives up to just 50% of the promise it holds it would blow the WII out of the water. With its hd graphics and substantial online backbone in place the kind of games that could be done with a controller-less system is mindblowing.
I love the fact that it would be almost like having your own Star Trek HOLODECK in your own room! Granted you wouldn't be able to reach out and touch them in three-d but you'd have nearly 1:1 interaction with the onscreen characters.
The only thing I could see being cumbersome would be in shooters with walking. I wouldn't want to have to litterally walk three feet forward and then back again and over and over to cover a virtual 100 yards to get from one spot to another on a map. I'd hope they'd develop some kind of macro for walking where you just point and click with your hands to simulate it.
I will say that is where Nintendo struck paydirt with the Nunchuck adapter on the Wii remote add-on. THat makes three-d movement like walking and jumping doable with its analog stick and zbutton.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -

Then openly stating that they did this and knew it was a mistake and promising the GameCube wouldn't be the same thing hurt them more because what happened? Well, the GC still had mostly kiddie titles right from the get-go and that scared off so many consumers that developers ignored it too.
I can agree that the top of the analog sticks on the PS controller could be a bit better.
As for the 360 d-pad, I play old-school games more than any other type. I downloaded the demo for the new Bionic Commando on 360 and within 5 minutes wanted to SMASH controller! SMASH!!! You can't play the game with the sticks, as it's designed specifically for the d-pad.
Downloaded on PS3 and no problems.
I bought Pac Man Champion edition (or whatever it's called) on LIVE and am so pissed because it's basically unplayable.
Also, I just picked up the 360 exclusive Raiden Fighters Aces

straight ports of classic arcade games that were designed to be played with a digital joystick - trying to play these games with the analog stick is like trying to drive from the back seat with stilts to the pedals and ropes on the steering wheel.
Can anybody recommend a good third party 360 controller with a d-pad that works?

@xylob - how about looking into a fighter stick for the 360? I know ones for Street Fighter 4 are ridiculously expensive but there have to be cheap knockoffs.
That way they would be next gen versions of the best fighter stick ever - the original NES ADVANTAGE. THat was perfect!
