Look at what's wrong with your video, figure out what's wrong with it, decide what filters you need.

Search. Try google searches like "Virtualdub noise reduction filter download". Or start with these:

Search google for "virtualdub guide". Or look through the guides here.

Go here : https://www.videohelp.com/tools/Virtualdub and start looking through the guides. Then, when you have some specific questions, come back and ask them.

If you want help, this is the place to get it, but you need to show that you have done some of the leg work yourself and are willing to put in the time.

Ok i see a brightness / contrast filter- now all i need to figure out is how that gets in filter/plugin(?) thingy of vdub and still searching for a nice simple vdub instruction guide so far all i see is answers to questions and very clueless with all that but still searching about - oh well - later . .

  5. Brightness/contrast is a built in filter. Just add it with Video -> Filters -> Add -> Brightness/contrast, then adjust the sliders.

    1) File -> Open Video File
    2) Video -> Filters -> Add (and configure filters)
    3) Video -> Compression (select and configure compression)
    4) File -> Save as AVI

For filters, I like: http://www.thedeemon.com/VirtualDubFilters/ A bit easier than Neuron's site to navigate. There is also a 'filter pack' there of most commonly used VD filters. Try Colormill. It has several filters all in one package. You just add the .vdf files to your VD plugins folder to use the filters.

VD is easy enough to figure out for the basics. It's very versatile. I prefer VD Mod most times as I like it's audio handling a bit better. You will probably want to add a couple of video codecs, XviD Codec and lagarith are two popular ones. And I would add the Lame MP3 codec for audio as it has more settings than the one included with VD. Also handy is the stand-alone program, Audacity to work with the audio.

VirtualDub doesn't create its own Start Menu entry - you just unzip the archive and use it. You can create a Start Menu entry for it, if you want.

Torrents are NOT video files. They're downloads, and can be virtually anything, such as a Linux LiveCD .iso disc image, or someone's Microsoft Word documents. VirtualDub only works with certain types of videos.

Did you see a difference in the before and after windows in VirtualDub? Also, when you're in the Brightness/Contrast dialog you can press the "Show Preview" button to bring up a preview window that shows your changes in real time as you move the sliders.

I think you are referring to the frame numbers near the bottom of the window. The number on the right will vary depending on how many frames are in the video. These are there just to help you navigate through the video. Moving the slider around navigates through the video. The exact frame number you are currently viewing is shown in the status area near the bottom of the window.

That usually means VirtualDub didn't correctly determine the frame rate or number of frames in the video.

It gets saved to whatever folder you chose to save it to. VirtualDub uses the standard windows Save File dialog. Use the pulldown at the top to see the full path. You can't save to the same file you are reading from. You can use the same name if you use a different folder.

You can start two instances of VirtualDub.

Make VirtualDub's window bigger. Use the usual window resizer in the bottom right corner.

Use the pulldown at the top of the Save File dialog:

Just move the frame slider to view different parts of the video. If you want a normal playback speed preview press the Output Playback button (third from the left). Depending on the speed of your computer you may not get smooth playback though.

The buttons all tell you what they do when you hover the mouse pointer on them.

  17. You don't need an older version. This functionality hasn't changed in eons. File -> Save as AVI.

VD will save to the last place it was set for. Just open any video in it and click 'Save as AVI' and you will see where it went.

  20. Yeah, but where's "Public"? You need to use the pulldown to see the entire path.

  25. I haven't seen lockups with AVI files very often. It sounds like your file is corrupt.

Computer players are more forgiving about errors in video files than converters will be - they'll ignore errors, and if they're small enough, you might not notice they're there just from watching the video.

VirtualDub isn't meant to be a player. It may not always play a video correctly.

  29. Try this:

Open a video with VirtualDub. Hold down a shift key while moving the frame slider back and forth along the time line. Does it lock up?
