I have a DVD I'm trying to rip, edit the video, and then burn.

I've used DVD Decrypter to demux the video/audio streams into .M2V & .VOB files
    Converted the .VOB to .mp3
I'm using VirtualDub-MPEG2 1.6.19 to join the video & audio into an AVI
I plan to use DVD Flick to then take the AVI files and burn them to DVD again.

I was able to convert a few of the .M2V & .MP3 files into AVI with VirtualDub. However, I run into a problem with a few .M2V files VirtualDub prompts
"Cannot detect file type of ...."

If I rename the .M2V to .MPG VirtualDub takes the file but when I save it to AVI the video is all messed up.

Why did the AVI conversion work in VirtualDub with some of the .M2V files but not others? Suggestions on how to convert the remaining .M2V files?

    Thank you in advance.

Avidemux , mpegstreamclip, Mpg2Cut2 and others will take vob directly without the need to generate useless avi.

Dvd to avi to dvd will include "more time" and degradation of quality through unnecessary re-encoding ... avoid.

From there simply use your favorite dvd authoring application.

  3. Yep, unless the intermediate AVI being created is lossless (Lagarith or HuffYUV, for example), this is a really stupid idea.

If you want to say the kind of editing you're doing, others can suggest programs to use that won't degrade the audio and video needlessly.

I wouldnt call it a stupid idea, sounds kinda mean, its just takes more time and you lose quality editing it that way,i would say theres better ways to do what you are doing such as using the mentioned programs and also try TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 if you want do do some basic dvd editing.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

Thanks guy for the suggestions. Screw you manono, I don't spend hours on this site learning the intricacies of video conversion. There is no reason to respond that way.

  6. Your method is singularly lacking in common sense. Even johns0 didn't say I was wrong, only that I was 'mean'. Both he and Bjs (as well as anyone else that knows anything at all about video encoding) also agree your method wastes both time and quality unnecessarily. Rather than calling it 'stupid' would you have rather I called it 'ignorant'?

Where you should have been asking for a critique of your method, instead you were asking why your method didn't work on certain M2Vs. Your method is broken for anything and everything.
