Ive found that when i just use windows media player to burn avi files onto a dvd-r disk, it plays ok, but when i use media player to burn it onto a dvd+rw it says the file format is not supported! is there any reason for that??

Possible reasons:
DVD+RW disc is not finalized.
You're using crap brand DVD+RW discs and your recorder hates them. ANYTHING not made by Verbatim that is a RW disc is garbage.
Your recorder is simply fussy and something in the firmware actually doesn't allow DVD+/-RW discs for AVI playback.
Please use the free ImgBurn for burning. Windows Media Player is a piece of garbage. It's really not helping matters to use it. For all I know WMP could have done something on the +RW burn that it didn't do on the -R burn that is the problem.
