My computer is about 9 months old and I've been able to successfully burn to dvd+r and dvd+rw discs. I'm in the process of converting vhs to dvd and have copied many times to dvd+r but now I can't burn anything to these discs, whether it be through Nero, ConvertXtoDVD or PowerProducer. I can now only burn to dvd+rw discs. I would appreciate it if anyone could offer any advice as to what the problem is and possible solutions. Thanks!

It might simply be an issue of the quality of discs you're trying to use.
See www.nomorecoasters.com for some tips on that.

Nero has a error log and the others may also. They may give you a clue on what the problem is. You can post the Nero log here if you like, just remove your serial number from the first lines.

Might I suggest using ImgBurn to burn. Its very very very good and its free. Much better than the many others I've tried.

Second check for upper and lower filters on your CD/DVD device files in the registry, that could be your problem.
"Some" software puts little locks on these things for nefarious purposes... nuff said.

The ConvertXtoDVD error mentioned something about a hardware error. Does this mean my burner needs to be replaced?

    SONYD21 = usually a good disc
.... but ONLY if it's made in TAIWAN.
Is this a MADE IN MALAYSIA disc, perhaps?

Know that laptop DVD burners are notoriously crappy, including the one you have.

I don't see the burn speed. Burn at 4x, see how that goes.

Replacement is an option -- but only after a few more tests fail. So don't ignore my questions, confirm any statements I make. Okay?

I checked the disc and it was made in Malaysia. However, I have also tried burning to verbatim discs at 4x speed and that's not working either, even though I burnt about 40 discs successfully from the same batch. It now only works for dvd+rw discs (no matter what brand), not dvd+r discs.

Have you tried burning with Imgburn? Also, it is possible for discs in a spindle to be of varying quality - a 'successful' burn doesn't guarantee every other disc in the spindle will burn the same way.

This is similar to the problem that I had with the burner in my Philips 3576 recorder. After 7 months, it no longer burned to + or - R's, just RW's. Most people on here, and the one or two helpful people at Philips that I came across, said that it was an indication that the burner is starting to fail. It could very well be a problem with the burner and not the media. If that is the case, the only answer that I've found is to replace the burner. (For me, that isn't an option. You can't just replace the burner in a 3576. I just burn to -RW's and then copy to -R's. For the OP, replacement is a simple project.)

Try the Imgburn experiment already suggested, in the small chance that it works (I'm pessimistic, but the cost of the experiment is so low that you ought to give it a shot). The evidence so far strongly suggests that your burner's laser has started to fail. It likely won't be long before you won't even get successful burns with +RW media.

The bright side is that you can replace that Matsushita POS drive with a far better one.

    Louise_10,

In the log you posted, the drive (burner) reported the reason for the burn failure was atapi error 040300, which is roughly the equivalent of the drive saying "Okay...okay...that was my fault...sorry about that" (technically it was a "peripheral device write fault" connected to a drive hardware error). Sometimes a drive can report the same error when the real cause was bad media, but since you couldn't even successfully burn 233 MB onto a dvd, that doesn't seem likely to be the case...or at least I've never seen media so bad that it can't burn right up by the hub.

You could try using ImgBurn instead of the other software you mentioned, but realistically, software can't do much about a hardware failure. You can also check the connections to the drive, just to be sure, but it's most likely your MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875S drive is dying/dead.

I see this thread contains your first posts here, so welcome to VideoHelp.

Thanks for your help everyone. I've tried ImgBurn and that didn't work either so it seems as though it's the burner. I'll check whether this is covered in the warranty.

If your drive is a IDE one then change the IDE cable. That would be the last resort and if that don't work then the drive is dying a slow death.

I believe that's a laptop burner and from looking around the net, that may be a common failure.

If so and you don't want to replace it, you might consider a external USB 2.0 DVD burner.

And though it's not likely to have anything to do with your problems, laptop laser lenses are often exposed, so you might check for dirt or grunge on the lens and drive mechanism.
