I love how they try to make it the internet's fault. "I found it on Google."

As lame as the crime seems, he still knew what he was getting into. he can't use all that "for legal purposes, only" excuse when breaking the law. He was making a profit off circumventing the system. It is the same as breaking into a bank that has (just for example) public toilets. You still have to expect that someone is going in there for non-legal purposes, not just to use the legal facilities.

That's why I wouldn't back up anyone's commercial DVD for them, especially not for a fee.

That's where most of these types of busts go wrong. It's either distribution (torrents) or profit (like this guy). No one gives a crap when you back up your own discs, specifically because they don't know that you're doing it. Even when something is marginally illegal, it's always much more risky the more people that you bring into your operation.

No question the punishment does not fit the crime.

There needs to be a prison that amount to high school detention. little cubicles where you have to do paperwork or assembly-line type of crap.

With the overcrowded prisons and easy deals, he'll get off with minor punishment. They threw out all the Worst Case Scenario possibilities for sensationalism.

I've actually seen a few of these cases (Playstation 1, for example), and it turned into a $1500 fine and community service.

But the guy was not copying games or DLing them and selling the games

You don't even have to put any kind of physical chip in a 360, just flash the dvd drive with a new firmware.
I believe you can softmod the original xbox as well.
Not sure about the wii though, never had one

I guess they better go after the guy who wrote the firmware for the 360 & for the samsung drives that allow you to copy 360 games

They could be busy, i see people posting all the time on CL to flash your 360 for $25.00, i even saw some nimrod wanting $90.00 & making you copies for $5.00 a piece
I was like you need to lay off the crack pipe dude
Charging triple what anyone else advertises for & then saying you will sell them copied games!!!!!!!

Next are they going to go after anyone who changes the region codes on dvd players

    Just ridiculous!!
Homeland Security authorities arrested Matthew Crippen,
    Seriously... WTF!!!!!!

max of 10 years time ...

from OP link ........... (my bold)
Prosecutor Mark Krause said in a brief telephone interview that, if the case went to trial, he could prove the illegal activity “a number of times.” The indictment (.pdf) charges Crippen with two counts, carrying a maximum 10-year prison term.

I watched something just a stupid on the news tonight...

A school punished a girl (detention?) because of something she wrote on her Facebook page, along with photos. Personal photos, personal statements, made on her own time, away from school. It was not even public, she had a profile only visible to friends.

    What the ****?

The person who deserves a punch to the nuts in that case is the "friend" who reported her. If no one can see these pages but Friends, then one of her so -called "friends" must have narced on her.

They arrest this guy, but won't bother seriously trying to keep out illegal aliens?

    Wait a minute...
    I am confused.....

Mentioning illegal aliens is political but talking about "Homeland Security" busting this little nobody for modding game consoles is not ??
Yeah, he is quite the threat to national security!!!!!!!

"Homeland Security" in itself screams political!!!!!!!!

Sorry, i just can't handle the irony here 8)
