    I am having problem with playback sound on DVD movies. All sounds are reproduced with the exception of speech.
    Playback of titles on BBC iplayer, error of missing direct speech is not applicable and all background sounds are reproduced.
    I have tried two DVD playback software and this applies of no "speech" comming from the people mouths.
    As I am receiving back ground sounds, and normal reproduced speech from other sources ie BBC iplayer, I presume that sound card is correctly functioning.
    Any suggestions to rectify this error will be most appreciated - sincere thanks.

    All speakers connecting wires have been checked over, and connected to correct sockets.

  2. You probably don't have a center channel speaker but you have windows configured to use a center channel speaker. Go to the audio setup applet and configure your speakers correctly.

    Possible problems:

    1) You are receiving only rear-speaker audio of a surround-sound audio stream;
    2) You are having phase-cancellation issues in the frequency range of human voices;
    3) You have lost your hearing in the frequency range of most human voices;
    4) You are playing a non-commercially-released DVD that is defaulting to a "mix & effects only" soundtrack stream (a mix usually available only for creating foreign-language versions of a movie).
    or...
    5) You are overmedicated.

    How many DVD movies are affected? Usually, most audio mixes have voices on every track--the possible exception being the rear channels of a surround sound mix.

    filmboss80, I presume that most of your suggestions, are tongue in the cheek humour!
    1. All speakers 5.1. Speakers are all producing sound.
    2. Not clear.
    3. My hearing is very good.
    4. All DVDs purchased from registered retailers. All produced sound and speech before error started.
    5. I am not a "junkie" or ever have been.

    Since error started, over twenty and still counting.

    jajbo, my set up is for 5.1 speakers.

    Speakers are all functioning correctly, except when using DVDs.

    Yes, I like to inject a bit of humor into my posts whenever possible. As for your problem, I am at a loss, except for the possibility of phase cancellation. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, perhaps you can do a search on the subject. Even if that were the case, I couldn't tell you the cause.

    If there is truly no speech (not just low-volume), perhaps your disc has a separate "soundtrack only" option. I've come across a couple such discs that were authored to default to the soundtrack-only option. Manually selecting a different audio track solved the problem.

    And if that doesn't work, and you are not currently on medication, then the solution is to start.

    Maybe you got a simulated matrix switch turned on which cuts out the center channel?

  8. This web site has a simple 5.1 test file that might help:
    http://www.lynnemusic.com/surround.html
    It's simple voice prompts that say "Front left, center, front right, rear left, rear right". Each prompt is supposed to come from the corresponding speaker.
