    Hi,

I am new to the whole concept of HDMI. I just got a Philips DVP5990 which I hooked up to my HDTV via HDMI and audio cables. When I want to set the DVD player to progressive, it is grayed out and the manual says that I would need the component connection for setting the picture to progressive.

Does that mean (a) that the player is set to progressive automatically whenever I use HDMI, or (b) that I should use the component connection and not HDMI if I want the progressive scan, or (c) another answer?

    Thanks

    Matt

I think it means only that you cannot change the setting via anything but component.

  3. The 5990 can output progressive to an HDTV. Go to the HDMI Setup page and set the resolution to 720p or 1080p. Not all HDTVs will accept 1080p so that may be disabled. After doing this the Progressive option on the general settings page will be gray but the player will be putting out progressive video. My HDTV can report the input signal and when I do this it reports: 1920x1080p 60 Hz.

I think if you're using the HDMI cable, the video is progressive by nature.

Also, the audio is transmitted via the HDMI cable to the HDTV, so you don't need to use separate audio cables.

It's progressive if you choose 720p or 1080p. It's interlaced if you choose 1080i.
