  1. I am trying to place my vhs to vcd's. I have a ATI aiw Radeon card and I can capture my movies to mpg-1 and save them to my hard drive. I also purchaced the Roxio EZ CD creator platnum and used it to make my vcd's. The progam tells me that my vcd is complete but I cannot view it on my home DVD player. On the pc I have to go to the DAT file to get it to play. My ATI software will only play vcd 1.0. I take it that Im burning to 2.0. I hope this is not a stupid question. Any help would be cool.

  2. i called a psychic but he was busy so i figured it would probably be easier to just ask you WHAT KIND OF DVD PLAYER DO YOU HAVE????
how the fuk can someone help you get your VCD playing if you wont tell us what you are playing the VCD on?

ok i know it says newbie on the forum but this is just common sense, come on, did you check the player list and see if you can play VCD AND cdr or cdrw? have you played VCD's on this player before? you mentioned something about ati software, well how about some version numbers? what makes you think your software only playes VCD1.0? did you get an error that said that? are you aware that VCD 1.0 is an ancient and antiquated standard?
    peace out,

  3. ok. My DVD player is a sony and its 3 yrs old but it does say it plays vcd's. I'll have to ck to see if it will play cdr's. The ati support told me that it will only play 1.0. The ATi version is 7.1. Did the Jackass at ATI lie to me about the vcd 1.0? I hope I help you enough.

For what it's worth, I have had a similar experience. The ATI card from what I have read here has conflicts with various things, but nonetheless, you still sould be able to do what you want. That is why I got into all this, was simply to copy old VHS to disk.

As for your Sony, check they player list for ideas. I have/had a Sony DVP-660 which was a couple of years old and said it played VCD's, but found I could only play VCD's made on STI made CDR's. They are sold under the Digital Media brand name at Circuit City. None of the other CDR's worked for me. I then tried 2 different Apex models, both were great on compatibility, but poor on quality, so I got a Pioneer 444 and have been very happy.

As for the ATI software, it is pretty weak, I simply use it to capture, and then use Video Studio to edit the video. Hope this helps,

    To Buffdr:

Noah gave you the answer that will eliminate your video capture/editing/encoding/burning problems.

Purchase real Video Editing software. I use VideoStudio 6.0 from Ulead. www.ulead.com

The ATI software has many minor annoyances, nothing that can't be overcome but a pain to deal with.

If you can capture your VHS to 352 x 480 AVI uncompressed, then make your VCD from the AVI file you will be pleased with the results. All of this can be accomplished from VideoStudio without ever leaving the program.

Your DVD player will more than likely play the VCD created directly from the Ulead software. If not, I would recommend the Pioneer DV-343. It's nice because it will play CD-RW's so you can do all kinds of experimenting with one disk until you find what the best settings are for "your system" and "your DVD player."
