I have a Philips DVD player DVP5990 which is 6 months old. Once I connected a 500GB portable hard disk to the dvd player and played a movie from the HDD, and left the HDD connected to dvd player overnight. In the morning the DVD tray keeps retracting in and out every minute or two. I tried factory settings, rolling back to old firmware nothing helps. I can still play from USB, but tray keeps popping in and out which is annoying, Is there any workaround for this problem. Any help is appreciated.

You're problem does seem odd. Can you play dvds in it, or circumvent the problem by placing a dvd in the tray? Have you tried to press the usb button switching it back and forth from the dvd to the usb a few times to see if the unit got stuck in a loop? Have you tried unplugging the unit? Before I bought a few wd hd media players I had mine hooked up 24/7 and it never did weird things like that.

Yeah, I'd try unplugging the 5990 from the power supply (wall socket, power strip, etc.), and leave it unplugged for at least half an hour - or even overnight, if you prefer, and see if that helps. That's a bit more of a factory reset than the option in the preferences menu.

Yes the problem is very strange, and the frequency of tray retraction is not happening always. It will retract in and out for 20 to 30 times in an hour, and then works fine for an hour, then repeats. If i leave the dvd player connected for more than 12 hours to power cord, the display turns into red. If I power cycle it, the display goes back to normal state. I tried switching between USB and DVD mode, that dint help, right now i dont have a DVD disk with me, I can try that option and post you the update soon. Thanks for your quick response.

Have you ever put a dvd in the player itself? I ran into a issue with an Rj-Tech unit that had a dvd that was stuck in the player that was not comming out with the tray. I opened the unti and took the DVD out manually and that solved that one.

My 5960 also managed to swallow a disk for no apparent reason. Had to open it up and remove it. It has the same door as my 5990 so it could be the same problem

So far I never played a DVD in that player. After taking it out of the box, I never put any DVD in the tray. For first 6 months, there were no problems at all, only after connecting 500GB HDD, the problem started. I cant see any CD inside the player stuch, do you suggest me to open it and have a look?

Maybe you unplug the 500GB drive and see what happens?
