  1. Hey all... i have a collection of about 100 avi files and understand i can play them on a home dvd player that supports Divx...my question is do i just save these files to a dvd and that will allow them to play or do i use a special software for burning them to a DVD? If i do, what is the best. Everytime i search, it's all for converting and not just writing the files. I have been working with DVD files for years but never had to deal with avi files.

    thanks!

    Exactly.
    Dumping the AVI files.....as DATA....to a DVD.
Does your DVD player support playing AVI files as data from a DVD?

  3. first you might want to check whether or not the "avi" files are in a supported dixv format. avi is just a general term for a container - "audio visual interleave" and can have many different formats inside it that are not at all playable in a divx machine.

use mediainfo or gspot on the files to check them.

And to add a bit to minidv2dvd's excellent advice, note that these divx-capable dvd players can be fussy about the particular parameters that they can handle (e.g. bitrate, resolution, audio parameters, etc.). So, even if those avi files are divx, that by itself does not guarantee playability. You'll just have to try it and see -- or check the manufacturer's documentation, but nobody ever does that.

Even with my Oppo 980 (probably better than most for such files), I've gotten very mixed results with this: often, the very same files will play from a thumb drive, but won't play from a DVD. And I don't know why that would be.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

Just a guess that could be wrong - maybe the Oppo doesn't support UDF versions above 1.02 on DVD and your DVD is burned using some other more recent UDF version. UDF won't be used when playing from a thumb drive.
