I just extracted a video with mkvextract and its in h264 format. Problem is vdub cant open it, "cannot detect file type of ..."
Also note: MPC cant run it, while VLC the video is blocky. Weird.
edit: But DSS works on the original MKV, hmmm.

Nothing strange about this. Many programs cannot read containerless video streams.

What was the original container? MKV or MP4, maybe AVI or MOV or something else?
MKVExtract may have not been needed.

If you want VirtualDub to read the file you'll need to run the .h264 video stream through AVC2AVI.
