DVD Shrink subtitles

When I have a language box checked under the subpicture heading, I get subtitles automatically when the backup is played.

I tried unchecking the subpicture boxes and checking the box "Disable all subpicture except menus and forced streams" in the preferences, which seemed to work, but with the movie Defiance the Russian subtitles didn't show.

I then tried the combination having both boxes checked but subtitles still show up from the beginning for all languages.

Any way to stop the subtitles from immediately playing without having to shut them off manually on the remote?

Under 'Preferences' there's a box 'Hide audio and subpicture streams of insignificant size', maybe that should be unchecked.
